WICKLOW ROVERS

The senior ladies kicked off their season in style with a 5-0 home win over Terenure last week. Natasha Fitzgerald put them in front after 13 minutes.

On the half hour, Niamh O’Brien made it 2-0 with Natasha Fitzgerald adding a second and Rovers third before the break.

The girls continued their dominance in the second half with Niamh O’Brien adding her second and Natasha Fitzgerald completing her hat-trick to round off a clinical display from the Rovers twin strike force to give them their 5-0 win.

It was an impressive all round team performance from the girls but a special mention goes to Valentine Lenoir and Rachel Bolger who put in a great shift in the engine room of the team.

The senior men went down to a disappointing 5-0 defeat to CIE Ranch last Friday night, to say it was a poor performance is an understatement as the lads never really produced any threat to the visiting team. The away keeper was never troubled throughout the 90 minutes something the lads are going to have to improve on.

With no junior games at the weekend due to the Easter break, we were curtailed to midweek action, on Tuesday our 11As and 12As came into direct opposition with each other in the under-12 Premier league. It was a very entertaining game with both sides producing some excellent football. The 12s ran out 3-0 winners at the final whistle with Kai Fitzsimons hitting a brace and Sam Greene netting a single.

On the same night, the 12Bs cemented their place at the top of their league when they defeated second place St Patricks 2-0 in their own backyard.

The lads were short of a couple of regulars but that didn’t stop them winning their eighth league game in a row and their tenth on the bounce. Ryan McConnell and Charlie Phelan hit their goals on the night to put them in a very strong position.

The 16Bs went down 3-0 to Avonmore in the second leg of their cup semi-final to lose out 11-1 on aggregate. In truth, this was a much improved performance from the first leg as the lads were unlucky on the night not to get a couple of goals themselves as they battled well throughout.

On Wednesday, the 13Bs went down 5-1 to a strong Roundwood side. The lads never really got going in this game with the away side been the more clinical in front of goal. Sam Christie nabbed their consolation goal on the night.

The 16As went down to a disappointing 8-1 defeat at home to Greystones in the first leg of their cup semi-final.

In a game where the team never really got going, and probably turned in their most disappointing performance of the season, Nathan Sullivan snatched a consolation goal but the lads now have a mountain to climb in the second leg.

The remaining game in midweek was our under-15As as they took on Coolboy Rangers. The lads lost 2-1 in what was a closely fought encounter. It was a game that could have went either way but it wasn’t to be and if there’s one team who need a

The long wait is over and as you read this the first game of the new season will have been played with our Division 4 team under the stewardship of Brian Dodd playing host to Sportslink last night (Tuesday).

Next Saturday sees our Division 1 team under the captaincy of Dave McMahon play at home to CYM at 2.30pm and our Division 2 team with Robert MacClancy in charge take on CYM away in Terenure.

This is a tough start for Division 2 as CYM have won the league in the last two years. Details of all the games will be provided next week. Best of luck to all for the coming season and especially to the new members who will be making their competitive debuts over the next few weeks.

Due to it been the Easter weekend there were very few games and only the under-9s and 10s saw action as both teams participated in the East Coast Soccer Blitz in aid of Wicklow Cancer Support.

Though there was a couple of showers on the day both teams refused to let that dampen their day and they both enjoyed their couple of hours of football. Well done to Butch Doran and all his helpers and to both Wicklow Town and Wicklow Rovers who both hosted the games.
