Absolutely fleadh- bulous
THE hills were alive with the sound of music as musicians, singers and dancers from all over the county made their to Tinahely last Saturday for the 2017 Wicklow County Fleadh.
This was the third occasion on which the local branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann hosted the event and, according to branch chairperson Mary Tallon, ‘it was an honour.’
Over 400 competitors took part in a variety of competitions across a wide range of instruments. Those who were awarded first and second place in their category will go forward to represent County Wicklow in the Leinster Fleadh Cheoil in Ballymahon in County Longford in July.
The fleadh was also used as an opportunity to raise funds for the local KARE facility. All of the proceeds from the tea room were donated to the local charity. An army of local volunteers gave their time and energy on the day and raised in excess of €1,500 for KARE.
‘It was a whole community effort’ said Mary. ‘Local people were delighted to hear of this cultural celebration on their doorstep and it was a perfect opportunity to raise some funds for KARE.’
When the official business of competitions finished up, the fleadh atmosphere continued with a lovely traditional Seisiún in Maggie’s Bar. At the Fleadh this year, it was clear to see and hear that there is no shortage of talent and Wicklow will be well represented in Leinster.
