SPECIAL MASS TO MARK ANNIVERSARY OF BABY ALANNAH’S DEATH

- BY MARY FOGARTY

MASS will be said for the late baby Alannah on Thursday evening in Bray, a year after the infant girl’s remains were found at the Greenstar recycling plant.

Thomas Murphy and Sons funeral directors arranged that prayers be said for her, 12 months to the day since she was discovered by workers at the facility. The Mass will take place in the Holy Redeemer, at 7 p.m.

They are hoping that people will go along to remember the baby girl, in the absence of a mother or father.

Despite appeals and investigations by gardaí, nobody has come forward since the sad news that the child had been found by the shocked workers.

Alannah was laid to rest at Redford cemetery in Greystones on the morning of Friday, May 13, 2016, with a ceremony organised by gardaí and presided over by Monsignor Enda Lloyd and Reverend Alan Breen. It was the gardaí who chose her name, meaning ‘dearest child’.

Since then, staff at Greenstar have put a headstone at her grave. The baby’s remains were found at the Greenstar recycling facility in Bray on Wednesday, May 4. Undertakers, florists, clergy and others contributed their services free of charge to ensure that Alannah received a fitting ceremony. Members of the community sent flowers, toys and gathered at her grave- side. Superintendent Pat Ward has said that the mother has nothing to fear from him, and she can still contact him in Bray Garda Station at (01) 6665300 or call the garda confidential line on 1800 666 111.
