Tutty resigns as from key role

-

WICKLOW’S operations manager Dave Tutty has handed in his notice to the Wicklow County Board and will finish in his role in early June.

The Hollywood native is 15 months into the new role that was created after the discontinuation of the full-time county secretary role but Tutty says that a growing frustration with the mechanics of getting work done and making progress and a lack of enjoyment in the position has led him to do what he feel is the best thing for all concerned.

“There’s no great mystery to it,” he said in relation to him leaving the position. “I tried it and, for me, I found it frustrating from the start and that intensified in the last couple of months. I wouldn’t be happy with what I’ve got done in the first year. I thought I would have got more done. In some areas the work we got done was done but others are not so good.

“working with committees is not the easiest thing in the world to do. I can’t say I didn’t know that before I started but there you are. Getting approval from committees, that has been frustrating.

“But there hasn’t been one headline issue that has made me come to this decision. If it’s not right and t’s not working then I think the fair and honest thing to do is to get out. I’m not enjoying it and if you don’t enjoy it you’re better off somewhere else.

“I’d be asking is a full-time operations manager the right thing, maybe there should be several part-time roles. Maybe a better solution can be found,” he said.

The operations manager’s job description is, as Dave Tutty describes, “very broad”.

“What I found over the last 15 months is that I focused on two or three big ticket projects, such as Ballinakill and coaching and games development.

“In Ballinakill you could put a month’s hard work in and at the end of it you would see results. Coaching and games development is the same. But most other areas can be very frustrating did three of four weeks at about 60 to 70 hours a week and at the end of the month we hadn’t achieved anything.

“Right now, we’re coming into a quiet time in terms of Ballinakill and the likes so that’s why I chose now to do this (leave the position).

“The support from the County Board and Leinster Council would suggest that they thought I was doing a good job but I wasn’t enjoying the job, that’s the most important thing and I think it’s time to get somebody else. When I told my two kids at home the eldest said to me, “So will you be home more?” And that hadn’t even registered with me. There are more important things but I hope I have made progress in a lot of areas,” he added.

Dave will remain in the role until the beginning of June when his notice is up.He paid huge tribute to the work of the coahcing and games satff.

“The coaching and games development has been the highlight. The work that has been done by the staff has been incredible. Jonathan Tallon has been a revelation and if the clubs support him we could see real progress for hurling in Wicklow. Darren Hayden has hit the ground running and is proving to be a revelation down in the south of the county and I admire them greatly,” he said.
