We are delighted to announce the that we have been awarded a BHIS grant this year of Eu9000 through our applications to Wicklow County Council. This is really great news. It will allow us to finish the works we started last year to stabilise the structure and allow it too be used for all and as a tourist resource. However, to avail of the grant we have to raise funds to match the grant awarded. This will form the main section of our fundraising. We appeal to all groups and individuals in the community to help us raise this amount. We are already over half way there with Darren Mooneys great concert earlier this year. Please help, it is a really lovely place. To visit take raod to Roundwood and follow the fingerpost sign to Kilmurray Graveyard. The lower graveyard contains this lovely 17th century church.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Not a whole lot of action in the past week but the 13s got the disappointment of losing the cup final out of their system with a comprehensive 6-0 win at home to Wolfe Tone. Defender Shane Dunleavy scored twice to make it four goals in three games while the other goals came from Fionn O’Reilly (pen), Bobby Dowling, Sam Gillan and Ryan Clarke in what was a very good all round team display. The under-eights played out a cracker with their Roundwood counterparts where Leon O’Connor, Oisin Duffy, Aaron Nolan and David McCormack all hit the net. The Nines after getting over their experience on Thursday evening travelled to take on Arklow United where among the scorers for Newtown were Sebastian Anton, Mikey Synnott and William Valentine. Among the players who starred were Eva Carey, Kacey Kelly and Max Roche. The under10s took on near neighbours St Anthony’s and despite a 4-1 loss they did perform reasonably well. Cormac Chance scored the Newtown goal. When you see a final scoreline of 9-11 you would be forgiven for thinking it was the result of a GAA or Rugby match but it was in fact a result from last Thursdays under-11s game. Obviously in a game of non-stop attacking football, the Newtown goals came from Mason Melia (5), Keira Farrelly (2), Ryan McMahon and Jack Coughlan. The club would like to wish Leighton Byrne (U-8), Pat Carey (under-nine) and Josh Kennedy (under-15) speedy recoveries after recent operations/injuries.

The following are the fixtures for the weekend of Wednesday, May 10 to Sunday. May 14: Under-eights No Fixture. Undernines No Fixture. Under-10s No Fixture. Under-11s away to Avonmore Yellow ko to be confirmed. Under-13s away to St Anthony’s ko Wednesday at 6.30 p.m. Under-13s away to Arklow Celtic ko to be confirmed. Under-15s at home to Enniskerry ko Sunday to be confirmed. (FIXTURES and KO TIMES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

We were delighted to welcome back last Thursday evening ex-junior Katie Taylor to the club. Katie was with Sky Sports who were filming a piece for their weekly programme ‘Sportswomen’ which airs on Sky Sports News (Channel 406) every Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. Katie came along with her mum Bridget and a Sky team to film and do an interview on her time with Newtown Juniors FC etc and with her she brought the Championship Belt she won last Saturday at Wembley stadium. Katie had a Q&A session with our under-nines team and assisted and took part in a session with their coach Lauren Nolan. Plenty of autographs and photographs were signed and taken as Katie was there for nearly two hours. Many thanks to Katie for coming along and no doubt all the kids went home buzzing after meeting Ireland’s greatest sportswoman and a very much down to earth lovely individual. We also had an under-11s game on Thursday which was slightly delayed as Katie posed for pictures with both teams and nearly every player (if not all) had their boots signed by Katie. Well done, everyone.

We have two players from the club celebrating birthdays in the coming week and they are Leighton Byrne from the undereights and Seán Douglas from the under-15s. Happy birthday, lads, from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC.

Our latest Last Man Standing competition will go into week eight thanks to the Champions Leicester City. Eva and Katrina had pinned their hopes on them and they duly obliged with a 3-0 home win over Watford. Unfortunately for our other Player Paul his selection came unstuck at home to bottom side Sunderland. Many thanks to everyone for their continued support.

On a sadder note the club members wish to extend their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Tommy Heffernan, who sadly passed away last week. Tommy was heavily involved in Schoolboys soccer throughout the country and served on the local WDSL committee for a number of years. May he rest in peace.
