Woodpeckers secure the cup for the first time
THE Tuborg Beer First Division Cup Final was played last week between the Woodpecker Bar and Restaurant, Ashford, and Parkview House B from Shillelagh.
Victory went to Woodpeckers in their first final and they were up against the defending champions.
The match was all square after the first two games but the Woodpecker took a lead when Paddy Byrne and man of the match Eric Melia won the first scotch doubles game against Parkview. They kept the lead until Martin O’Brien took his chance to win the match when he beat Johnny Lyons to win the cup for the first time
To the First Division League then and the defending champions, Joe O’Toole’s, from Aughrim, played the surprise package Black Toms from Tinahely who had pulled off two great wins away against the Lodge from Carnew in the quarter-final and away against the cup winners the Woodpecker Bar from Ashford.
But they could not match a strong team lead by team captain Brian Doyle who won the first match against Martin O’Neill 3-1 the second match was James O’Toole against Black Toms team captain Gary Byrne which O’Toole won 3-2 the last game saw man of the match Neil Carroll win 3-0 against Charlie Evans and win the league title for the second year running the match was held in The Talk of The Town.
