Seconds kick-start super Sunday

-

ASHFORD Rovers were crowned Division 3 champions on Sunday, kick-starting a magnificent day for the club.

The 1-1 draw between Balllywaltrim and Arklow Celtic, meant Rovers couldn’t be caught at the summit.

Ashford had put themselves in a strong position at the head of affairs thanks to a 1-0 win over fellow high-flyers Rathnew in midweek, with Chris Sillery heading home the all-important goal.

Arklow Celtic needed three points on Sunday to keep their slim chances of catching the pacesetters alive, but Mark Flanagan gave Ballywaltrim the lead and although Wayne Kenny equalised they couldn’t force a winner.

That meant that Stephen Nichols’ Ashford side got their hands on the trophy and the celebrations could begin.
