Byrne bags the winner

-

AN Anto Byrne penalty sent Shamrock Celtic into the Charlie Bishop Cup final as they edged out Roundwood 2-1 at the Vartry Grounds on Sunday.

Celtic went ahead just before the interval through an own goal, but the hosts restored parity shortly after the turnaround when Robbie Eyre fired in a superb free-kick.

The visitors didn’t take long to regain the initiative, however, with Byrne converting a spot-kick to send them into the final for the first time.

Meanwhile, Wicklow Town AFC saw of Rathnew AFC B 8-7 in a penalty shoot-out in their quarter-final meeting.

The game had finished 2-2 after extra-time, with goals from Richard Murphy and John Connors putting Town 2-0 up, before the Village stormed back, with Philip Nolan and Mick Nolan replying to force extra-time.
