NON-UNIFORM DAY

Many thanks to students who participat­ed in and contribute­d to the recent non-uniform day in aid of the Martin Family Trust. The amount raised was €1,400, which will now be presented to the Martin Family.

SCIFEST

Well done to the group of first, second and third year students who exhibited projects at Scifest in DCU on Friday, May 5, Congratula­tions to Lucy Toomey, who won the DCU Best Junior Life Sciences Project, and to Sam Ireland, Dylan Symes and Oisín Cullen, who won the DCU Best Overall Group.

DRAMA

Well done to the CCA Players and to the Junior Drama group on their fantastic production­s of ‘The Beauty Queen of Leenane’ and extracts from ‘The Lonesome West’ in Newcastle last week. The students displayed wonderful acting talent and both nights were thoroughly enjoyed by the audiences.

SPORTS DAY

A fantastic sports day took place last Wednesday at school. It was a really enjoyable day and there was a super participat­ion rate by students in the many events that took place on the day. Many thanks to Rob, Eoghan and Daniel for the excellent organisati­on of the event and their infectious enthusiasm for all things sport and fun. GERMAN EXCHANGE

A group of Transition Year students participat­ed in a German Exchange with the Riemenschn­eider School in Wurzburg, Germany. Students participat­ed in many activities during their stay and they also attended classes and prepared a presentati­on on the German Irish Exchange. Many thanks to Ms Egan and Mr Kennedy for organising and accompanyi­ng the students on what was a most enjoyable trip.

FIRST YEAR PRESENTATI­ONS

As part of the first year work, students in Coláiste Chraobh Abhann had to devise and present a five-minute talk on a subject of their choice. The students put effort into their presentati­ons and the chosen topics were both interestin­g and varied ranging from the Kings of Ancient Egypt to Safety around Houses. The presentati­ons were judged by councillor Nicola Lawless. After intense deliberati­on the winner was Megan McDonald with her presentati­on on ‘The History of the Circus in Ireland’. Runners-up were Ryan Hayden, who researched the early life of Donald Trump and Callum Farrelly for his work on Darth Vadar. Well done to all students.

ANNUAL PRIZE GIVING CEREMONY

Prize Day takes place this Thursday and Friday, May 18 and 19. The whole school community and invited guests will take time to recognise the hard work and great efforts of our students over the past academic year in many categories including academic, sporting, leadership, entreprene­urship, civic, cultural, musical and artistic. Students will be awarded academic prizes in each subject area, with a number of Sixth year students receiving perpetual awards for subjects studied in their Leaving Certificat­e year. Sporting awards covering team and individual efforts from camogie, soccer and hurling to basketball and athletics will also be presented.

SIXTH YEAR GRADUATION EVENING

Next Thursday evening, May 25, sixth year students will bid an emotional farewell to Coláiste Chraobh Abhann at their final graduation ceremony. There will be speeches from students and staff and a series of songs sung by the students. Mr Farrell, year head, will give the ‘Rogha na Bliana’ award to the most outstandin­g boy and girl of the year, along with other prizes. Staff, parents and local clergy will be in attendance for what promises to be a memorable evening.

TRANSITION YEAR EXHIBITION EVENING.

Staff, students and parents look forward to an exciting and varied evening on Tuesday, May at the exhibition evening. This is an evening where parents can really appreciate the personal developmen­t and teamwork that marks out TY as such an important year for many students. There will be exhibits covering entreprene­urship, music, drama, art and many more. Many thanks to all the staff who are helping prepare students for this important evening. 30, TY

PARENTS’ INFORMATIO­N EVENING AT THE SCHOOL

Paula Tunney of Community Awareness of Drugs will host a Parents’ Informatio­n Evening on drugs and alcohol in the school on Wednesday, May 17, at 7.30 p.m.
