POWERSCOURT/KILBRIDE

Services of Worship in Powerscourt for Sunday, May 21 – Rogation Sunday: 8.30 a.m. – Holy Communion (Said); 11.30 a.m. – Outdoor Rogation Service with Holy Baptism in Powerscourt Rectory Grounds and Marquee and followed by Family Picnic (bring your friends and packed lunch – tea or coffee/drinks provided). ‘Rogation’ is connected to the Latin word for ‘ asking,’ and refers to a traditional time of praying for agriculture. Traditionally celebrated on the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of the Sixth Sunday in Easter, Rogation Services have been a time to pray for planting and for those working with the land. In rural areas, many people bless the elements used in farming, the fields, the seeds and animals while in urban areas, a blessing of gardens, and local businesses. It can also be a time to show gratitude for soil, water and growth, and to challenge us to think carefully of the food we eat, our care of water, earth and seed; 1 p.m. – Church lunch in the Powerscourt Arms and Country House Hotel.

Daily Prayer and Open Church, midday to 5 p.m. each day: Powerscourt Church has reopened for daily prayer. This year there will be two times of prayer, midday and 5 p.m. with the church being open between those times for quiet space and personal prayer.

Fr John Wall: Last Saturday the parish said adieu to Fr John Wall at the 7 p.m. Mass followed by Social Evening in Summerhill House Hotel. Fr John Wall was born September 1942 and is one of a family of six, four brothers and his sister Marie. Growing up on Brandon Road, Drimnagh, Dublin, he went to school at Coláiste Mhuire, Parnell Square, Dublin. He entered Holy Cross College, Clonliffe, Dublin, in September 1960 having completed his Leaving Certificate. In the Seminary John excelled in studies and acting. Few of us will forget his wonderful performances in ‘A Man for All Seasons’ and in ‘The Horrid Popish Plot’. He has always been blessed with a wonderful sense of humour with which he regaled his fellow seminarians and later priests over the years. He had been a member of the FCA and loved it, while suspecting that his present hearing difficulties are in part due to his involvement with gunfire. Ordained on May 28, 1967, by Archbishop McQuaid, John was appointed to London where he studied for one year at the London School of Speech and Drama. On his return, he was appointed to Clonliffe to lecture in Homiletics. Appointed to Ballyfermot in 1970, he revelled in his ministry there particularly with young people and was instrumental in founding the Peace Corp there.

Subsequently, in 1978 he was appointed to Rialto for nine years and then to Seville Place, as parish priest. During these years he also assisted student priests in their preaching formation. Moved to Clondalkin, he was to spend 10 years there before finally coming to Enniskerry, where you have experienced his generous priestly ministry. Permeating all of John’s ministry has been a keen social awareness for those less fortunate. His wit and humour, coupled with his skills as a homilist, have benefited so many during his 50 years of service.

Underlying all of this and coupled with his deep sense of priestly ministry, John has always had a profound philosophical mind and could easily have pursued higher studies in that field. The Archdiocese of Dublin and the people of Wicklow and Dublin owe this man a debt of real gratitude for his faithful, joyful and generous service, not without its hardships, for so many years. A faithful, loyal follower of the Lord, may he be blessed with a happy and well deserved retirement – Fr Alex Stenson.

Mass Time Change: Following Fr John’s retirement, there will be no 7 p.m. Vigil Mass in St Mary’s Church in the future. Masses on Sunday will be at 10 a.m. in Curtlestown and Kilmacanogue, 11 a.m. in Enniskerry and 9 a.m. on the first Sunday of the month in Glencree.
