Coláiste Bhride Carnew see off St Kevin’s in ‘A’ decider
THE Wicklow Post Primary Schools Junior ‘A’ camogie final took place in Carnew on Tuesday between the holders Coláiste Bhride and the ‘B’ champions St Kevin’s.
St Kevin’s played with a fair wind advantage in the first half but both teams were to play better against the breeze
Points were exchanged in the early stages but two goals by the dangerous Naoise Hennessy in the middle of the half gave the home side a good lead.
Just before referee Cathy Forde blew the whistle for half-time Emma Tomkins added another Coláiste Bhride goal to give them an interval lead of 3-4 to 0-3. The Dunlavin school had also had their chances in the first half but were thwarted by a fine defence.
Any thoughts that a runaway win was on the cards were soon dispelled when Mollie McCormack opened the second half scoring with a St Kevin’s goal in the fifth minute.
However, two minutes later Naoise Hennessy had the ball in the net at the other end and the same player scored another goal a few minutes later.
St Kevin’s soon began to dominate pos- session and were rewarded with two goals by Hollie Eve Cullen Dunne but Coláiste Bhride replied with late points by Saoirse Kenny and Emma Tomkins for a well deserved win.
Coláiste Bhride captain Laura Doran was presented with Corn na nGairm Scoil after the final whistle.
This was a competitive game between two skillful teams. The winners had a better spread of top class players with Emma Tomkins and Naoise Hennessy outstanding. Jenny Tyrrell was in top form in the St Kevin’s defence while the Cullen Dunnes and Amy Switzer also impressed.
