More violent scenes at GAA match

May 2004

WICKLOW GAA is once more in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons following a second case of an assault taking place during an underage game in just over a week.

An under 12 football match on Monday night saw an Aughrim/Annacurra mentor assaulted as he came to the aid of one of the side’s young players who had been thrown to the ground by a female spectator.

The mentor received a number of cuts and bruises to the face after another male supporter set upon him with a flurry of fists.

The match had to be cancelled as a number broke down in tears after witnessing the terrifying scenes.

Philip Bracken, South East District Board Secretary, said that they were aware of the incident were awaiting the referee’s match report before dealing with the matter further.

However, he stated that something would be done as soon as possible and stressed that it is totally unacceptable for a member of the crowd to interfere with one of the players during a match.
