ST FERGAL’S PARISH

Parish Fête 2017 Cancelled: Following a meeting of the Parish Fête Committee last Monday week, it was decided, that taking into consideration the poor attendance at last year’s Fête and the lack of volunteers to help with this year’s event we had no choice but to cancel it for 2017.

As the Fête was the main fundraiser for the parish for the year we have to replace it with something else, so, it was agreed that we hold a Monthly Cake Sale, together with, perhaps, a small amount of bric-a-brac, and a small raffle, to be held in the St Anthony Room. The first of these Sales will take place week ending the June 17 and June 18 and the sale of cakes on this particular weekend, will be combined with the sale of floral arrangements for the Parish Cemetery Sunday, which takes place on Sunday, June 18 (Father’s Day) in Springfield Cemetery at 2.30 p.m. In order to make this first weekend a success, and to make the Cake Sales which we hope to hold on the last weekend of each month throughout the year, we need Bakers, and we need Buyers. So, if you would be willing to bake a cake (or two) to help us make these fundraisers a success. And remember. Everyone loves a homemade cake. Many Thanks.

QOP YOUTH CLUB

Members of the Queen of Peace Adventure Youth Club continue to enjoy the water sports season. On Tuesday their third session was enjoyed with over 30 members canoeing, body boarding, and just splashing around in the water. Some used the glass bottomed canoes to see the underwater world, and the canoe instructors were Paul and John.

In charge of safety at the seashore were Eoin, Sarah, and Kathleen, while Mike, Albert, and Stephen looked after the clubhouse.

Paul has been carrying out this activity with the club for over thirty-five years and he is just as enthuastic now as he was in the beginning all that time ago.

SEACREST RESIDENTS

The Seacrest residents’ association annual general meeting will be on Thursday, May 25, at 7.30 p.m. in the Parish Centre beside Our Lady Queen of Peace Church.

This association was started in 1973 and its aim was to keep the estate in good order. There is no doubt that the association has done that, and indeed continues to do so. Almost every resident in the estate is a paying member of the association, and this how the committee maintain the area to such a high standard.

CUALANN SOCIETY

Last Thursday night Michael Lee was the guest speaker for the May meeting of the Bray Cualann Historical Society, the local history society for Bray and North Wicklow, at which he presented his lecture ‘Edward Lee – A Model Employer’ and ‘Lees of Bray’ in the Royal Hotel, Bray. B

efore the lecture commenced a special presentation of a bouquet of flowers was made to Nancy Mahony to mark her 90th birthday by May Harte, on behalf of the Society’s president, Eva Sutton, who was unable to attend the meeting.

In his lecture Michael Lee spoke about the life and career of businessman Edward Lee who opened his first drapery shop in Bray, Co. Wicklow, in 1885 and unlike many employers at the time, had a strong social conscience and a very caring approach towards his employees and was responsible for creating the half day mid week closing.

As a member of the Housing Committee of the Bray Urban District Council, Edward Lee oversaw the erection of municipal housing in Bray in 1905 which up to then had been neglected by the council and the Bray Township Commissioners. He subsequently served as chairman of Bray Urban District Council and later sat as a member on Blackrock Urban District Council.

He also had a strong social conscience and during the 1913 Lock-out profoundly disagreed with the tactics used by William Martin Murphy and other employers against the strikers and was a man of moral courage. He lost two sons in the First World War, one of whom was lost on the RMS Leinster in October 1918 – both are commemorated on the Bray War Memorial beside the Carlisle Grounds.

Part of the large audience included former employees of Edward Lee and Company which resulted in a very interesting post lecture Q& A session. At the end of the meeting society chairperson Brian White screened a selction of images of Bray showing Lees as it was.

This was the final meeting of the Society’s Spring 2017 programme – the next events for members are the five events that will take place during Heritage Week which are displayed on the Society’s web-site – bray culalannhistoricalsociety.ie. CALLINGALLBRIDGEPLAYERS
