His terse gunslinger in Sergio Leone’s 1964 spaghetti western made precious strong, silent heroes seem chatty by comparison, and there was no mistaking the charisma that allowed the actor to carry off this exaggerated role. His powerful screen presence complements the rough brio of Leone’s film, a near-parody of a Wild West yarn.
