Coláiste Bhríde are debate champions

-

COLÁISTE BHRÍDE IN Carnew emerged victorious from the final of Wicklow County Council’s Schools Environmental Debating Competition recently.

Since October, 16 teams from 12 schools have argued and counter-argued their way through five rounds of debates until it all came down to the grand final on Tuesday, May 23.

In the end, it was a hard-fought contest between the Carnew school, represented by Max Moroney (team captain), Laura Ivers and Laura Gallagher, and Colaiste Chraobh Abhann’s team of Hyrum Scott (team captain), Lucy Short and Sophie Heaton.

The two teams discussed the challenging motion that ‘Origin Green is green washing a farming industry that is unwilling to clean up and reduce its impact on the environment’, with Colaiste Chraobh Abhann proposing the motion and Colaiste Bhride opposing it.

Both teams put forward very convincing arguments but it was the southern school that was declared the winner. However, there was some consolation for the north Wicklow school as Sophie Heaton was selected by the five adjudicatiors as the winner of the award for best speaker.

Cllr Pat Fitzgerald, cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, presented the prizes awards.

The awards for the winning team was created by the Calnan and Anhoj forge at Russborough House in Blessington while all six speakers and the best speaker received beautiful pieces from Jenny Kelly Pottery in Wicklow town.
