WORLD WAR I EXHIBITION

On loan from the National Library, an exhibition about the Irish experience in World War I was on view in the School Canteen for the last two weeks of the school term.

210,000 men from Ireland volunteered for armed service. Those that supported the cause enlisted or travelled to serve in nursing or auxiliary services. Others objected to the war on moral, social or political grounds. The inevitability of a European war and horrific loss of life was experienced by all participating nations including Ireland. In the months preceding the declaration of War on August 4, 1914, the more immediate threat of conflict was closer to home as Ireland was brought to the brink of civil war over the issue of Home Rule. By the end of 1918, its impact had been fully felt throughout the length and breadth of the country.

This exhibition focuses on the unique aspect of the Irish World War I experience. The exhibition is linked with the National Library website. It contains newspaper reports, artefacts and first hand personal accounts to bring students inside the lives of those who experienced World War I.

TY CARLIGFORD

Transition Year students rounded off their year with an overnight trip to Carlingford Adventure Centre where they engaged in a range of fantastic activities including Crystal Maze, Lazer Combat, canoeing, water trampolining and zip lining in the sky park. All agreed that they had a great time there and it was a brilliant end to a successful year.
