Awards for school gardening competition

The children of Bray put their green fingers to work in recent months, for the ‘Bray School Gardens Competition’ run by Bray Grow It Yourself and Edible Bray. The awards were handed out to the winners last week after a very successful season of gardening.

The aim of the competition was to support schools in Bray to bring nature, wildlife, plants and colour into their schools. The young people got to interact with their environment in a positive way and to increase the awareness of children about where their food comes from.

Students were asked to develop school gardens.

A panel of judges visited the gardens in May.

Winners received prizes of garden vouchers of €400 for first prize, €200 for second, and €75 for third, for the best edible garden and the most environmentally friendly garden.

There was also an overall prize for best school garden.

It was a hugely successful project, which the children enjoyed immensely.

SECOND PLACE – BRAY SCHOOL PROJECT: Richard Webb from Edible Bray, Brian Duman, Sammy Breton Young, Cllr Steven Matthews, Cathaoirleach of Bray Municipal District, Alice Murphy, Frank Kellegan and Suzanne Godfrey.

HIGHLY COMMENDED – NORTH WICKLOW EDUCATE TOGETHER: Deirdre Crowe, Richard Webb from Edible Bray, Liam O’Brien and Cllr Steven Matthews, Cathaoirleach of Bray Municipal District.

HIGHLY COMMENDED – ST ANDREW’S NS: Marion McGovern, Robert Berkeley, Cllr Steven Matthews, Tyler Dixon, Caroline Aragane and Isabelle Sexton.
