KILLEGAR CEMETERY MASS

John Callan, president of the Enniskerry History Society, wishes to remind readers that on the evening of Thursday, June 29,, the annual blessing of the Graves in Killegar Cemetery will take place at 7 p.m. and all are welcome to attend.

There is a great deal of history attached to this site as it is known that it was a monastic settlement dating from the early Christian times. After 400 AD, the earliest building were constructed of wood or wattle and daub but have not stood the test of time and so very little remains of them. It was only with the arrival of the Vikings that the switch over to constructing buildings and churches with stone commenced as it was quickly discovered that these withstood the ravages of invasion better than wooden/timber buildings.

On this basis, the church at Killegar was built sometime during the ninth century with the site consisting of a small church and a number of small bee-hive huts where the monks lived. This cluster of buildings was enclosed by another inner wall which cut off the monks from the outside world.

The cemetery also contains a Mass Rock dating back to the era of the Penal laws, with two of the oldest gravestones being dated 1830 and 1854 respectively. About ¼ mile north-east of the church is a well known as ‘The Well of the church’, the waters from which were supposed to cure sore eyes. Some of the artefacts recovered from this site are thought to be at 1000+ years old.

John Callan, president of the Enniskerry History Society, extends a special invitation to all local history societies in the surrounding area to the Thursday, June 29, ceremony.
