Arklow mourns loss of Maggie

- By DEBORAH COLEMAN

THERE was deep sadness felt in Arklow town on Saturday when local lady Margaret (Maggie) Fortune tragically passed away following a fire at her home.

Born in 1937, Maggie was known to many in the community, particularly the residents of St Patrick’s Terrace where she lived.

Maggie was the eldest daughter of James and Sarah Fortune and lived at 15 St Patrick’s Terrace her whole life.

Although she retired years ago, Maggie worked at Arklow Pottery since she left school at St Joseph’s, Templerainey. It was a job she loved and she was dedicated to it, never missing a single day.

She was so content in her place of employment that when she finished working in the pottery section she took up a job in the on-site canteen.

Maggie’s brother Patrick, who is the only sibling still living in Arklow, fondly remembered his sister and said that she was always good humoured and full of chat.

Maggie looked after their mother at home until she passed away and was a loving and kind daughter.

She also loved animals and always had a dog and a cat and, in later years, a budgie.

Before Maggie became too frail to get out and about by herself, she would often be seen walking her dog up and down the Sea Road. She loved her community and getting outdoors to the beach with her nieces and nephews.

She was also a regular in the Bridge Hotel for a coffee with her friends and enjoyed music, particularly that of Brendan Boyer.

Maggie was a member of the parish of St Joseph’s Church, Templerainey and had a great faith.

Funeral arrangements are still being finalised but Maggie will be laid to rest with her parents and her sister Theresa. She was also predeceased by her brother Benny.

Maggie is survived by her brother Patrick and Jimmy, sister Elizabeth, extended family and many friends.
