FOOTBALL AND FUN!

Turn of the girls as schools attend blitz in Greystones

-

THIRD and fourth Class Girls Football – June 21 saw the turn of the third and fourth class girl footballers.

Kilcoole, St. Laurence’s and Newtown were in attendance in Éire Óg Greystones for the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Blitz for third and fourth class girls.

There was great enthusiasm, skill and teamwork on show. It was a super display by the girls on a hot summer’s day. Well done, girls!

West Wicklow Junior Infants ‘Have A Ball’ Fun Day - There was a very successful day held for junior infants in schools from West Wicklow in Hollywood GAA Grounds on June 21.

The children took part in fun games and activities that focused on improving movement skills. The Leinster Roadshow inflatable pitch was there too. Well done to Paul Garrigan on arranging such an innovative day for the infants and well done to all who participated.

St. Laurence’s Represent Wicklow - On one of the first ‘Championship Sundays’ of the summer, St Laurence’s NS, Greystones, got the opportunity to strut their stuff at half-time in the Wicklow v Louth Leinster Senior Football Championship match at Parnell Park on May 21. Fresh from winning the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Coughlan Cup competition, the team were invited to play an exhibition match against their Louth counterparts.

During the first half of the senior match, both teams were eyeing each other anxiously in the stand and nerves reached fever-pitch as they lined up waiting to take the field.

There was little to be worried about, however, as both teams gave a great account of themselves, showcasing all that is great about Gaelic Games; sportsmanship, skill and speed of thought and play. Some great scores were kicked on both sides, much to the delight for the spectators in the stand.

Alas, the teams had to move aside to let the ‘big boys’ play on, but give it a few years and they could well be the ‘big boys’ themselves!

Players for St Laurence’s on the day- Picture 1: Front row (l to r): Rueben Palmer, Ben O’Brien, Tom Meyler, Robert Murphy, Séan Meyler, Back row (l to r): Oísín Murphy, Thomas French, Daniel Callaghan, Jayne Merren, Gearóid Murphy, Ryan Collville, Cian O’Lionaigh.

Safe travels and good luck - Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Cill Mhantáin would like to wish Cisteoir, Tara Walshe safe travels and the best of luck. Tara will be heading off to Boston later in the year. Seán Stakelum, former Tráth na gCeist officer, is taking another year out to stay abroad.

Both of these members gave of their time and are truly committed to the promotion of Gaelic games in our primary schools.

We thank them for their hard work and dedication. We’ve no doubt they’ll take the love of their sport with them and the Monaghan and Tipp colours will be flying further afield! We wish them the very best of luck in their endeavours and we hope to see them back in the Garden County in the not too distant future!

Happy Holidays

Allianz Cumann na mBunscol would like to wish all teachers, parents and children a happy and safe summer holidays. Hopefully the sun will shine and there’ll be lots of opportunity to get out in the fresh air, play some games and have fun. Best of luck to all playing in Croke Park in the summer. See you all in September ready to go again!
