Schoolchildren creating beautiful gardens at St Fergal’s

-

The children of St Fergal’s have created beautiful and useful gardens on their grounds, with the help of Grace Garde from An Taisce.

The vegetable garden won the Edible Bray competition recently, for producing a crop of delicious greens.

Grace came to the school to deliver the nature studies primary schools programme.

She created the natural gardens with the children who enjoyed the experience immensely.

The project began in October of last year. Each class from junior infants to sixth class had their own plot.

They also have a natural water pond, with frogspawn and tadpoles, and an area to grow edibles such as tomatoes, courgettes, and lettuce.

It was a very successful project. Every class participated and the experience was most valuable, as some of the children wouldn’t have their own garden at home.

There was some funding available to the school from an American university. This is something the school will keep up and the gardens should flourish even more over the coming years.
