Avoca gets its own playing field
July 1990
AVOCA THIS week celebrated the fact that it has got its own community playing field after a 20 year struggle.
The community playing field is being provided on six and a half acres of land behind the Woodview Park housing estate which is being leased from Wicklow Co Council.
And now a local 11 member committee, headed up by Parish Priest Fr Dan Breen has been set up to oversee the development of the community playing field which will incorporate two playing pitches and dressing rooms eventually.
It will be known as Rooster Park in memory of 18 year old local boy Tony Whelan who passed away a year ago.
A scout member in Avoca, Tony Whelan was very much admired and respected amongst his peer group.
The signing of the lease and payment of the first year’s rent on the field took place on Thursday night at a ceremonial function arranged by the local committee in conjunction with Wicklow Co Council.
It was followed by an ‘Ole Ole’ party in the village at 9 p.m. when the craic included a barbecue and music by the Avoca Ramblers.
Work will then start on developing the community field, which will require a major effort in terms of sponsorship as well and the committee hopes to attain the objectives they have set themselves within two to three years.
