Cider gang’s fire threat to trains

July 1989

-

A CIDER party gang is believed to have been responsible for a major fire which threatened C.I.E. train services on Saturday morning last.

The gorse blaze at the Murrough caused major problems for already overworked local firemen who had to carry a portable pump for over half a mile to battle the fire.

The blaze was raging close to the railway lines and for a while C.I.E. staff were reluctant to let the ammonia train from Arklow go through.

Firemen, who had worked tirelessly on other incidents over the previous day, found empty cider bottles and the remains of a bonfire when they eventually got the blaze under control.

As it turned out, the ammonia train was allowed through once it was considered to be safe.

The Murrough area is still widely used on Friday nights for cider parties by young people from the town, some as young as 12.
