GAA CLUB NOTES

The first round of the senior championship resulted in a tough draw against Avondale in Ashford last Sunday. Newtown played against the wind in the first half and finished two goals down but fought hard in the second half to a three point lead however a last minute controversial penalty resulted in an Avondale goal and a draw at final whistle. The next round is against Annacurra in a few weeks’ time.

We enjoyed glorious sunshine recently at our popular junior magpie’s nursery which takes place every Saturday at 10 a.m. on the pitch, the nursery is for kids aged 4-8 and great fun is had by all every week.

The under-7 and under-9s next blitz is this Friday in St Pat’s, both of these teams are training on Tuesdays at 6.30 p.m. The under-11s are back in action tonight with a home game against Newcastle. The under-13s are doing well in the league and train on Mondays at 6.30 p.m.

The under-8-10 girls played Ashford last Saturday and training is on Wednesdays at 6.30 p.m. The under-12 girls won their league with a great victory over Coolk- enno last Tuesday. This is a great achievement as it is the first juvenile girls league win in the club’s history, so a massive well done to all the girls and the management team of Eoin, Ned, Loretto and Lorna. The girls have only lost one match all season and are now moving up to the A championship where they will fear nobody.

The under-14 girl’s had a win over Clan na Gael and their next game is at the weekend against St Nick’s. Training is Mondays and Thursdays at 7 p.m.

The under-16 girls suffered their first defeat of the year last week losing to Éire Óg but with three games left we are still top of the league, training continues every Wednesday and Friday at 7 p.m.

Unfortunately we are losing two of our hard working juvenile mentors as they head back to the sunny south east, we say a hearty big thanks to Ken and Bernadette and wish them along with James and Kate all the best in the next chapter of their life.

If you need more info about any of our juvenile teams please give Shay a ring at 087 2699620. All membership is now overdue and must be paid immediately.

The Kellogg’s Cúl Camps are returning to Newtown once again this year from July 24 to July 28 and online registration is now open (kelloggsculcamps.gaa. ie) Please note we will not be accepting money or registrations on the first morning of camp.

There is a good stock of club gear now available to buy for any enquiries regarding club gear please contact Amy at 086 3332195.

Five people won €40 last week as they matched three numbers from four 7 16 27 however no one scooped the jackpot so it rolls over to €4,200 this week

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Saturday, July 1, was the date for our Presentation Day. As part of the day we had organised Bubble Football for all our teams. We had also organised other games to keep the large attendance busy. Sher we even made the rain stay away.

If that wasn’t enough we had the finals of our Mini World Cup to play out. All this before a medal was handed over. As per usual things don’t always go to plan or run smoothly but once we got going the momentum moved the event along nicely. All the teams got their time in the Bubble Football and by the looks of it all the kids enjoyed it, as the smile on their faces would testify.

The finals that followed went as followed with goalscorers in brackets - U-5/7-year-olds – USA (Tommie Ryan) 1-1 Belguim (Nathan Donohoe) and Iceland (Colin Healy 8, Kayla Hamilton and Calem O’Brien-Kenny 10-3 Ireland (Jake O’Brien-Fitzsimons, AJ Doyle 2

Under-8/9-year-old finals – England (Pat Carey and Cathal O’Toole) 2 – four Argentina (Leon O’Connor two, Aidan Heffernan and Aaron Nolan), Holland (Mikey Synnott two and David McCormack 2) 4-0 Brazil and France ( Max Roche two and John Vincent Kelly) 3-2 Germany (Nichita Neaga 2)

Under-10/11-year-old finals – Wales (Ryan McMahon) 1-0 Sweden and Italy (Grace Murphy two, Matthew Doyle and Aaron Cawley) 4-1 Scotland (Dylan Dunleavy)

These games were followed by the very popular ‘Tiny Tots’ game where up to 20 aspiring footballers put on a show. Next week we will put up a list of all the players and their countries that played in the World Cup.

Senior Women’s Internationals Stephanie Roche (Sunderland LFC) and Áine O’Gorman (UCD Waves) gave up their time to present medals etc for the boys and girls present.

Our under-13 team received their medal for runners-up in both the Premier Cup and shield and included Bogdan Rusu, Rebecca Gillan, Sam Gillan, Shane Dunleavy, Jason Carthy, Shane Synnott, Darragh Heffernan, Luke Breen, Bobby Dowling, Ryan Clarke, Marcel Kocajda, Fionn O’Reilly, Martin Kelly and Simon Plant.

Our under-15 team received their awards for winning the Cup and finishing runners-up in the league and included Ryan McGuirk, Josh Kennedy, Ben Moran, Stephen Doran, Andrew Waters, Alex Byrne, Ciaran Mangan, Josh Odlum, Steven Coughlan, Ryan Smillie, Andrew McMahon, Seán Douglas and Alex Kelly.

It was then time for the annual awards and they went to as follows. Top Goalscorers: Cormac Chance (10’s), Mason Melia (11’s), Fionn O’Reilly (13’s) and Steven Coughlan (15’s). Most Improved Players: Jack Daly/Dylan Dunleavy (10’s), Keira Farrelly/Pádraig Gammell (11’s), Shane Synnott (13’s) and Josh Odlum (15’s). The club person of the Year went to Rory Hackett coach of the under-11s while a very much caught unawares Hughie Nolan was presented with the Darren Magee perpetual Cup. Again many thanks to Stephanie and Áine for their time and it was very much appreciated.

On the day we have a lot of people to thank and they were Katrina, Dave, Ryan, Paul, Lauren, Vicki, Grace, John, Geraldine, Johnno, Suzanne, Shane, Rory, Bobby, Stephen and Clodagh (I know I’ve left someone out). Others to make contributions on the day were, David Murray, Parkview Hotel, Newtown Community Centre, Niamh Synnott, Audrey Magee, Freddie Hamilton, Mary Valentine and Colette Hunt Trophies. Sometimes thanking these folk is not enough as some of them were in the pitches at 10.30 a.m. (in the morning) and didn’t leave till 7 p.m. (in the evening).

Despite the large attendance at the Presentation a number of players had to leave early for various reasons and didn’t get to collect their medals etc. Please contact Hughie and he will make arrangements for you to get your award. Also as usual various items of clothing/football boots were left behind, so please check that you have everything. Thank you all for a great day.

We have just the one player celebrating a birthday this coming week and she is Keira Farrelly from the under-11s. Happy birthday Keira from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC.

On a sadder note all at Newtown Juniors FC extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Ann Marie Fitzpatrick, who sadly passed away recently. May she rest in peace.
