Black Castle under siege by gurriers

July 1992

-

TEENAGE drinkers have turned one of Wicklow town’s most picturesque tourist spots into a tip and are making life unbearable for local residents.

Under-age youngsters who gather at the Black Castle for drinking sessions involving cider and larger have been branded ‘gurriers’ by Cllr Bob Kearns, who alleged they kept residents of the area awake until 3 a.m. or 4 a.m. in the morning. And he lashed the inconsiderate teenagers for turning one of he most scenic areas in Wicklow town into a tip, with dozens of cans littering the Black Castle after the drinking sessions, sending tourists away with a poor image of the town. ‘ The people of the area have had enough of the littering of the Black Castle and the disturbances which are going on. Now the people are going to do something about it within the law and with the help of the law,’ he stated, referring to a new Neighbourhood Watch scheme which is being formed in the area.
