St Kevin’s Way part of pilgrim journey
TRAIL AMONG FIVE INCLUDED IN FIRST GUIDED WALK FOR HERITAGE WEEK
ST KEVIN’S Way has been included as part of Ireland’s first ever fully-guided pilgrim journey.
The guided journey along Ireland’s passported pilgrim paths will take place during Heritage Week, August 19 to August 26, and includes five ancient routes overall.
St Kevin’s Way follows in the footsteps of St Kevin through the hills of Wicklow to the valley of Glendalough where he spent the rest of his life in solitary prayer and contemplation. The main route starts in Hollywood, while the alternative route comes from Valleymount.
The paths meet and join at Ballinagee Bridge. Walkers then climb toward the Wicklow Gap, the highest point on the route. The flagstones of the old pilgrimage road are still visible in sections.
The route then follows the descent of the Glendasan River into the Valley of Glendalough. Before proceeding to the monastic buildings.
At the launch, Chairman of Pilgrim Paths Ireland, John G O’Dwyer, said there has been a renewed interest in following in the footsteps of pilgrims from the past.
‘ This pilgrim journey is not just for those who enjoy exploring Ireland’s ancient tracks, but also the growing numbers seeking to escape the daily grind of life and take time out to reflect and meditate a little while enjoying the outdoors.
‘ This is an ideal opportunity to complete some of Ireland’s most captivating paths with like-minded people,’ said Mr O’Dwyer.
Knowledgeable local guides will lead the St Kevin’s walk, allow time for personal contemplation, outline the story of the route and explain how medieval penitents coped with their arduous journeys. Advance booking is essential. More information on how to book can be found on www.pilgrimpath.ie.
