DUNLAVIN AUGHRIM 7-20 0-5

DUNLAVIN hit back with a comprehensive display against a weak Aughrim outfit in Baltinglass last Friday evening in this Darcy Sands Intermediate Football Group 2 encounter.

Manager Tom Harney needed a big display from his team to get their championship credentials back on track, after a defeat by Rathnew last time out.

Dunlavin hit the ground running and had four points on the board before Robert Lambert added a brace of frees after some good football by Shane McGuickan as Aughrim got on the board. Dunlavin were first to every ball as Aughrim could not live with their pace and movement anywhere on the field.

Gary Allen, back after injury, racked up 2-04 in the opening half along with lively corner-forward Cian O’Sullivan, who was also back after injury.

Dunlavin really missed the calibre off this pair against Rathnew last time out. Robert Lambert tagged on another brace of frees for Aughrim.

Dunlavin finished out the half and game as a contest leading 3-11 to 0-04 as John Whyte’s half-time whistle sounded.

Tomas Harney emptied the Dunlavin bench for the restart. Mark Rigley made his intermediate debut and landed 1-05 to give Harney another option. Aughrim added their only score of the half when full-forward John Keenan was fouled. Robert Lambert pointed the resultant free to complete Aughrim’s tally.

Daniel Dawson and Marty Caplis each chipped in with goals as they didn’t ease up one bit. Eoin Murtagh and Mark Rigley added a goal each as they laid siege to the Aughrim goal to close out the third quarter.

Barry Miley hit Dunlavin’s seventh major as the game came to closure. Aughrim will face Ballinacor in a local derby next, while Dunlavin have a must win match against Kilmac, who surprised Dunlavin in the championship last year in Valleymount, however after this annihilation only a fool would write them off.

Dunlavin scorers: Garry Allen 2-04, Mark Rigley 1-05, Barry Miley 1-00, Daniel Dawson 1-00, Eoin Murtagh 1-00, Shane Carthy 0-05, Marty Caplis 1-01, James Walsh 0-02 , Cian O’Sullivan 0-01, Fionn Deegan 0-01, Tom McGuirk 0-01.
