BRAY BOWLS

THIS week on the rink was typical of Bray this season in that consistency is very hard to find on a regular basis.

Wednesday saw our Division 6 team take 3 points at home to Shankill. They are joint top of the table with Crumlin. Remember lads it is a marathon and not a sprint.

Our Ladies Division 1 team went to Dun Laoghaire and brought home 1 point.

On Thursday Vets 1 and 2 were at home to Greenhills and Greystones respectively.

Greenhills who had won the league were impressive in leaving Bray with 3 points while Vets 2 took all 4 on offer against Greystones where Martin Delaney and Dean Kenny led the way. Thanks to Mick Dunne for all the sandwiches during the season.

This week sees Division 4 at home in a very big game against Leinster on Monday evening.

On Tuesday Division 1 are at home to Aer Lingus and here is hoping that they play smart and overcome the high flying northsiders.

On the same evening Division 2 make the long journey to Skerries to play under the windmills. Let us hope the wind blows in the Bray direction.

Wednesday has Division 6 in Crumlin and the Ladies at home to Crumlin.

Thursday sees all 3 Vets teams in action with Vets 1 at home to CYM, Vets 2 away to Clontarf and Vets 3 at home to CYM. For both Vets 2 and 3 it is the last match of the season.

Saturday, July 22, sees our Ladies team at home to Westmanstown and our Division 2 are also at home to Westmanstown. In order to avoid a clash with the Air Show both of these games start at 10.30am.

On the same day Division 1 are away to Crumlin.

Finally thanks to Greystones who hosted a great days social bowling last Wednesday and all the Bray bowlers who were there will be back for the lemon cheesecake !!!

WICKLOW ROVERS

THE senior ladies took on bottom of the table Castletown Belles last week.

The visitors made the long journey from Dundalk in search of their first points of the season but Rovers were in no mood to give them anything as they ruthlessly brushed aside their opponents 13-1.

Top scorer Niamh O’Brien and Rachel ‘’The Goal Machine’’ Bolger both netted five times, Valentine Lenoir nabbed a brace with Natasha Fitzgerald completing the thirteen goal haul in what was a good all round team performance.

There was definitely a lot of potential for the future on show as the kids demonstrated their skills while enjoying themselves in the fun and games.

The club would like to thank Charlie Mitchell and Anthony Earls for all their help during the two weeks, a big thanks to Johnny Dunne, Robbie Dover and all our coaches for all their hard work over the course of the camps.

Last but not least a massive thanks goes out to all the kids and their parents who came out in such big numbers to support this year’s camp, the kids were excellent all over the two weeks and everyone had an enjoyable time, your continuous support is very much appreciated by everyone at the club.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

AT the recent AGM of the WDSL it was decided courtesy of a vote to move the WDSL season to a calendar season.

This means a year ahead of a directive from the FAI that the WDSL will have a “short season” followed by a “long season”.

The “short season” will start beginning of September 2017 and finish the end of November 2017.

The new season or long season will commence end of February/ beginning of March 2018 and will finish in November 2018.

There will be breaks during the course of the season to facilitate state exams etc.

We will post further details as we get them.

Also in another initiative and also due to the amount of girls playing throughout the WDSL the league are looking at setting a girl’s league at U12 and U14 and if this venture proves successful the league will look to extend it to all age groups.

The proposal is to run the girls football every two weeks and all players can double up on their mixed team within their club.

Again as we get more information we will post it here.

Some of our teams will be back in training at the beginning of August and we will keep you all up to date with all developments.

We have two players celebrating a birthday this coming week and they are Lily Murphy from the Under 8’s and Ciaran Mangan from the Under 15’s.

Happy birthday from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C.

On a sadder note we extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of May Connolly who passed away recently. May she rest in peace.
