Round two of the senior championship against Annacurra is scheduled for Sunday, July 30, in Arklow. Training is continuing in earnest along with scheduled league matches with one planned for yesterday evening. (Tuesday)

Over recent weeks we have enjoyed glorious sunshine at our popular junior magpie’s nursery which takes place every Saturday at 10 a.m. on the pitch, the nursery is for kids aged 4-8 and great fun is had by all every week.

The under-seven and undernines had a great blitz recently in St Pat’s, their next blitz is at home this Friday the 21st, both of these teams are training on Tuesdays at 6.30 p.m.

The under-11s were back in action last week and train on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Tonight’s (Wednesday) match is being rearranged and possibly will be played tomorrow, a text will be sent around to confirm.

The under-13s are doing well in the league and had another good win away to Ashford they train on Mondays at 6.30 p.m.

The under-eight to 10 girls played in a blitz in St Pat’s and are improving with every outing. Training is on Wednesdays at 6.30 p.m.

The under-12 girls who won their league recently have only one game left before the start of the championship.

The under-14 girl’s had a fantastic win over St Nick’s last Saturday, the girls came back from 10 points down at half time to win by the minimum, this win guarantees their place in the A championship. Training is Mondays and Thursdays at 7 p.m.

The under-16 girls got back to winning ways win a victory away to St Nick’s and suffered only their second defeat against a strong Blessington side and with only one game left we are sitting pretty on top of the league, training continues every Wednesday and Friday at 7 p.m.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

At the recent AGM of the WDSL it was decided courtesy of a vote to move the WDSL season to a calendar season. This means a year ahead of a directive from the FAI that the WDSL will have a ‘short season’ followed by a ‘long season’. The ‘short season’ will start beginning of September 2017 and finish the end of November 2017. The new season or long season will commence end of February/ beginning of March 2018 and will finish in November 2018. There will be breaks during the course of the season to facilitate state exams etc. We will post further details as we get them.

Also in another initiative and also due to the amount of girls playing throughout the WDSL the league are looking at setting a girl’s league at under-12 and under-14 and if this venture proves successful the league will look to extend it to all age groups.

The proposal is to run the girls’ football every two weeks and all players can double up on their mixed team within their club. Again as we get more information we will post it here.

Some of our teams will be back in training at the beginning of August and we will keep you all up to date with all developments.

We have two players celebrating a birthday this coming week and they are Lily Murphy from the under-eights and Ciaran Mangan from the under-15s. Happy birthday from everyone at Newtown Juniors.

On a sadder note we extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of May Connolly, who passed away recently. May she rest in peace.
