ÉIRE ÓG GREYSTONES

Our Senior and Junior footballers would welcome your support in their championship games at the weekend. Juniors play St. Pats in Rathnew on Saturday, July 29, at 7 p.m. and the Seniors take on Avondale in Pearse’s Park, Arklow on Sunday 30th at 11 a.m. (confirm times).

IOMÁINT - One is still wiping the sweat off one’s brow, it was hard work pushing our senior hurlers over the line in Aughrim on Sunday evening in their third game in the league stages of the championship.

Their opponents were Carnew. It was a must-win game for the Éire Óg lads if they were to stay in the race for a place in the playoff stages. But oh! how difficult did they make the task for themselves.

Éire Óg won by a single point in an all-point game, 0-11 to 0-10. Save for the last vital minutes Na Clocha Liatha were behind on the scoreboard (a magnificent long-distance point from a free by Anto Byrne brought the score to level terms about seven minutes from the end) and this was in no small way due to the team’s penchant for giving away often needless frees. In both halves they had conceded two scoreable frees in the first two minutes after the throw-in.

A strange feature of the game – although it changed a little towards the end – was that for both teams a sideline puck was more often a liability rather than a help as, in general, its delivery was either poor or went directly to opponents’ hands.

The game ended in a welter of drama. It was well into injury time with the score standing at 011-to 0-10, Carnew are awarded a free about 30 m. out on the right hand side very near the sideline.

The free taker had established his accuracy during the game so a score seemed almost certain.

The ball is driven hard and accurately towards the Éire goal but fortunately low enough for Dan O’ Neill to reach it and bat it away. Final whistle, buíochas le Dia.

PEIL NA MBAN faoi 16: Between holidays, Gaeltacht, commitments to the adult team and, not least, injuries, it has not been easy for the mentors to field teams.

Numbers at training have not been hugely encouraging and Séamus and Michael have often left at the end of sessions pessimistically asking “will we have a team for the next outing?”

Thankfully, to date, the answer has been in the positive and one might add quite successful.

Recently these cailíní travelled to Newtown to take on table-topping locals in the league and came away with a 3-11 to 3-7 win from a very exciting encounter. The contest aptly fell into the category of a ‘game of two halves’.

Éire Óg dominated the first period and were in the apparently unassailable position of being 3-11 to 1-2 ahead at the break.

However all changed, changed utterly in the second half with the hosts very much in control after the resumption and outscoring our gcailíní 2-5 to 0-4 before the final whistle.

One can imagine the nail biting that went on in the Clocha Liatha camp as it watched its half-time lead being whittled away and having all the appearance of disappearing before the end. Thanks to some heroic last-ditch defending this did not happen.

Scorers: Ellie O’Neill (2-5), Kerry-Anne Hamilton (0-6), Eva Roche who played at centre-back contributed a goal, Katie Lawless (0- 2), Eva Magennety and Ella Horgan (0-1) each.

Allana Ní Sheáin stepped up from u-14 to make a huge contribution to this win with an outstanding display in goals and Gemma Kiely gave quite a performance against her old team.

It was up to Laragh for the team’s next match which was against Valleymount. This game had little of the tension and competitiveness of that against Newtown and Éire Óg had a comfortable win over the depleted Blessington-lakeside team.

The adult team, a work very much in progress, was at home to AGB (Arklow) ladies in their second match in the league stages of the championship.

In their previous game they had been well beaten by St. Pats, the pace-setting team in the division in which Éire Óg is plying its trade, so they were hoping to give a bounce-back performance against AGB.

In the event this they did, and in a game in which they just as easily could have won they lost 3-11 to 1-14.

PEIL-BUACHAILLÍ: Our under--11 footballers recently played An Tóchar in the two-team format of that age-group’s league. The teams were:

Team 1: Seamus Darcy,Cathal Kirby,Daniel Burns,JamesO’Dowd,Tom Meyler,Sean Meyler Jack Caffrey, DarraghShanahan, Evin Donnelly,Tom O Mahony, Cathal Byrne, Michael Lamson, Finn Baxter, Daniel Burns,Charlie Grogan.

Team2: Gavin Lincoln, Robbie Owens,Piaras Healy,Nathan Donnellan, Sam Cunningham,Robert Moore,Daniel Connerty, Charlie Fox, Liam Finn, Alec Bartek, Hugh O’Carroll, Liam Booth, Matthew Casey, Thomas Darcy, Dillon Kelly.

These squads were boosted, as per the rules, by the ad hoc promotion of Liam Booth, Thomas Darcy, Michael Lamson and Dillon Kelly from Division 3. These younger lads proved themselves well capable of holding their own at this higher level. Many of the players in these teams are developing into fine intelligent footballers and the club is hoping they will stay with it for the long haul. Stand-out feature of the games was the exceptional goal-keeping of Gavin Lincoln and Séamus Darcy.

BRAY EMMETS

Lotto: The numbers drawn were: 24, 25, 28, and 5. The next jackpot will be: €20,000.

Congratulations to Tom Kearney who wins €25 in the Lucky Dip.

Senior Hurling Championship Round 5 Bray Emmets vs Avondale.

The fixture with Avondale was never going to be one that would cause us a lot of concern as Avondale are far from the force they were back in the day, not winning any of their games so far in this year championship. None the less it had to be played and won and try not to get any injuries or sending’s off in the process.

We started well and appeared to be well up for it, points from Padge, Diarmuid, Ciano, Mikey and Marc Lennon put us in a very strong position and after 20 minutes one could see we were never going to be under any pressure to claim the points in this one.

A goal from Lennon and a few good saves by Tom Finn in the Avondale goal were the only few moments that brought a cheer in Greystones on a wet miserable Sunday morning, 1-11 to 0-01 at the break tells the story.

The second half did brighten up a bit, both weather and the hurling, Diarmuid and Mikey were firing over some lovely scores from long range and all five subs were used, Tom Cash replaced Ben, Karl for Conor Doherty and Liam Benville for Eoin McCormack, and a little later in the half Conor McNally came on for Lennon.

Lukie O’Reilly then replaced Conor McNally, who was injured , and two of the Dales men were sent off. Thankfully our boys kept their discipline and we managed to keep all our players on the field. The final whistle was very welcome.

The final score 1-23 to 0-07, the next game is against St Pats on the 20th August, a win here would see us into the semi-final. Many thanks to all the helpers, especially Cameron and Ronan O’Brien for their decisive action dealing with the injury.

RATHNEW

A very busy week for us on the playing fields for the club!

Intermediate football championship result: Rathnew 1-10, Ballinacor 1-8. Great win for our Intermediate team Wednesday in what was a tough battle. After 20 mins we had 1-7 on the board, however Ballinacor pulled themselves back into it with a few points from play and a goal after an error from us.

We were lucky not to go in level at half time as Ballinacor missed a penalty. The second half was nip and tuck all the way through, but the lads dug deep and came away with the win.

Rathnew v AGB in Arklow - The under-14 girls travelled down the M11 to Arklow tonight to play Arklow, winning on a score line of 6-8 to 2-7.

Under-14 girls v Kilcoole, Thursday, July 20 away - The girls travelled down to Kilcoole and came away with the spoils winning on a score line of 9-7 to 3-1. Well done to all involved.

JUNIOR B CHAMPIONSHIP - Rathnew 1-11, Avoca 0-6 - Our Junior B team made the perfect start to this year’s championship with an 8 point victory away to Avoca on Thursday night.

Conditions didn’t allow for free flowing football, with the match being play almost completely in a down poor, but our men dug deep and led from the start to the last kick of the game.

Our next two championship games are at home so keep an eye out for fixtures and get up and support the lads.

Well done to our under-17 team who had a very impressive home win against a fancied An Tochar side last night.

Right from the beginning the lads were really up for this one and they dominated the 1st half. Early scores from Eoin Doyle and Dylan Smith gave them a great start. The whole team were playing excellent and more scores from Eoin Doyle including a well taken goal, helped with some fine points from Jack Healy and Kyle Devlin gave Rathnew a half time lead of 1-10 to 0-3.

Although both sides began sluggishly after the restart, our lads settled down again and played some nice football in the 2nd half.

Rathnew ran out comfortable winners in the end by a scoreline of 2-15 to 0-4.

There were some excellent performances from Reece Doyle in the goal, right up to the corner forwards in attack. It is easy to see the hard training over the last few weeks is beginning to show.

We have a brand new range of merchandise available in the clubhouse. It will be on sale on sat mornings at 11 or from Catriona, phone 0871816586.

KNOCKANANNA

No winner of this weeks jackpot ,€3,600. Numbers drawn were 02, 06, 07, and 23.

Two match threes - Catherine O’Keeffe and Aine O’Keeffe each receive €50.

Sellers prize was Betty Wybrant for €20. Next week’s jackpot stands at €4,200.

Knockananna had a great win in Division 3 of the league away to Enniskerry last Sunday morning. This leaves the lads two wins away from Intermediate football for 2018.

Keith Corrigan set the tone early on with a superb goal after 30 seconds. Dereck Kavanagh followed this up with a goal of his own five minutes later.

The score line now read 2-01 to a point and it would have been easy for Enniskerry to fold up their tent and leave, but they got stuck in to the opposition for the next 10 minutes outscoring them 1-02 to a point leaving the half time score 2-05 to 1-03.

The first 20 minutes of the second half was sloppy from both sides and it wasn’t until Alan Byrne fired a rocket to the top corner that Knockananna awoke again.

Keith Corrigan and Lorcan Tyrrell added two further goals leaving the final score 5-10 to 2-06. This is a remarkable result as we are now down to a panel of 17 due to injuries and retirements.

A big thank you to the Enniskerry club who agreed to play this game three days after they played in the championship, as the original fixture was two weeks previous but due to our horrific injury list we were unable to field a team. We now face Valleymount in Aughrim on Saturday at 5pm in the championship. Valleymount are championship favourites and have remained unbeaten all year, racking up massive scorlines in the process so all support would be greatly appreciated.
