Side Chapel Mass: The side Chapel Mass group will return at 10.30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, September 10, This group is for families with small children.

SVdP Collection­s: The amount raised in August for the Saint Vincent de Paul was €1,630. The annual collection to help bring a sick person to Lourdes amounted to €1,530. Thank you to all who contribute­d for your continued support and generosity.

Christian Mothers: Meetings will resume on Tuesday, September 5, at 2 p.m. in the Parish Hall. The Christian Mothers have been active in the parish for many years. QOP YOUTH CLUB

Due to demand the Queen of Peace Adventure Youth club did not close for the customary two weeks in August, and the club water sports activities continued. This included canoeing, body boarding, surfing, coasteerin­g.

On Saturday, September 23, a land and sea triathlon will take place and the event will conclude with a presentati­on of certificat­e awards and a barbecue.

DIVING CLUB

Eleven juniors who joined Bray Divers Sub-Aqua Club have done very well, and all are now experience­d snorkelers. As the colder weather approaches it will be interestin­g to see how many of them will acquire thicker wet suits to continue the sport despite the much cooler winter conditions.

The club is planning an away trip to St John’s Point in Donegal in September, one to Lanzarote in October, and another to Portroe Slate Quarry in November. To date this year the club has organised over 60 dives.

CUALANN SOCIETY

Monthly meeting of the Bray Cualann Historical Society, the local history society for Bray and North Wicklow, have now concluded and will resume again in September in the Royal Hotel, Bray when the Society’s autumn programme will commence.

The Bray Cualann Historical Society commenced its Heritage Week 2017 programme of talks and walks last Saturday with a talk by James Scannell at 11.30 a.m. in Bray Library, Eglinton Road, Bray, covering ‘August 19 to August 27, 1917, in Bray’, recalling a variety of events that took place in Bray.

Today (Wednesday) Brian White will lead a ‘Killarney Road Walking Tour’ which departs from Bray Town Hall at 11 a.m. This walking tour will be repeated on Saturday at 3 p.m. departing from the Town Hall. Please wear suitable foot gear and dress appropriat­ely for the weather conditions on the day for these walks. Admission to these walks is free and all are welcome.

Tomorrow (Thursday) James Scannell will give a short talk ‘August 19 to August 27, 1942’ at 11.30 a.m. in Ballywaltr­im Library, Boghall Road, Bray. Admission free – all welcome.

The final event takes place in Kilrudery House, Bray, at 3 p.m. on Sunday when Brian White will present his talk’ Trains, Planes, Automobile­s, and Family Stories from Kilruddery.’ Admission free but booking required via Kilruddery House web-site.

Alpha/In-Between Book Club: There are no Book Club meetings till September. The three books for summer reading are: ‘Once we were Sisters’, a memoir by Shiela Koehler; ‘Circling the Sun’, a novel by Paula McLain, and ‘The Stars are Fire’, by Anita Shreve. Meetings will re-commence on Tuesday, September 26, The Thursday Group: No meeting this month.

ST ANNE’S PARISH

Mass Times: Mass is celebrated in St Anne’s Church at 10 a.m. and 7.30 p.m. Monday to Friday (except July, August and September). Weekend Mass times are Saturday 6.30 p.m. Vigil Mass and on Sunday at 8 a.m., 10.30 a.m. (Family Mass), midday, and 6 p.m. Confession­s are heard on Saturdays after the 10 a.m. Mass, between 12.30 p.m. and 1 p.m., and after the 6.30 p.m.

Please note that there will be No Evening Masses for the months of August and September. Evening Mass will resume on Monday, October 2.

St Patrick’s Chapel, Loughlinst­own: The celebratio­n of the Sunday 9 a.m. Mass has now ceased in the Chapel and will resume when essential maintenanc­e has been completed.

Hospitalit­y: Hospitalit­y after the 10.30 a.m. Mass on the second and fourth Sunday of the month has ceased and will resume on the last Sunday of September.

Monthly Film Night: Please note that there will be no film night this month (August). The Film Night will return on the last Saturday of September when the movie showing will be ‘South Pa- cific’.

Youth 2000: Please note that Youth 2000 meetings in St Anne’s Church, are taking a break for the month of August and will recommence on September 7.

BOOK SALE

The September First Saturday Book Sale, which supports the Shankill Old Folks Associatio­n and Meals on Wheels, will take place between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Shankill Old Folks Centre. Lower Road, Shankill, on Saturday, September 2. Donations of books, other than school/ text books, accepted on the day.

Last Friday night the week long 43rd summer series of Evening Lectures, organised by the Rathmichae­l Historical Society, the local history society for Shankill, Ballybrack, and the surroundin­g area with a lecture on ‘St Mary’s Abbey and its Medieval Grange farms, Co. Dublin’ presented by Geraldine Stout.

HOSPITAL MEMORIAL

Last Saturday afternoon an ecumenical memorial service to remember those who died in St Columcille’s Hospital from its earliest days as a workhouse in famine times or more recently as a caring hospital, was held in the hospital cemetery at 2 p.m.

Organised by the hospital management, the attendance included clergy from St Anne’s Parish, Shankill, Rathmichae­l Church of Ireland, Cabinteely Parish, those attached to the hospital and members of the public.

In the brief ceremony, a number of bible reflection­s were read, the grounds were blessed and incensed, memorial candles lit, with music from a healing harp being played throughout the ceremony.
