HELEN’S BEAUTIFUL WORKS IN OIL
DEBORAH COLEMAN ON A NEW ARKLOW EXHIBITION
A NEW OIL painting exhibition will run at the Arklow Gallery on Main Street until Friday, September 15.
Artist Helen Hiney was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in England and moved to Ireland in 1980 with her husband and two daughters.
She took up painting as a hobby after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1989. Helen had no formal art training, but after working with watercolours for a number of years she has now turned to oils.
Helen has exhibited her work in St Stephen’s Green in Dublin, Carlow’s Éigse Arts Festival and the Kilkenny Arts Festival.
Her work is in private collections across Ireland, Britain, the US, Canada, Italy and Japan. Her designs have been used for Christmas cards for both the MS Society and the Irish Wheelchair Association.
Helen had the honour of presenting one of her paintings to the former Irish President Mary McAleese.
The official opening took place in Arklow last Tuesday and the works have been well received to date. Admission is free and all are welcome to drop in and view the works.
