Former Green Party leader Trevor Sargent is ordained in Shillelagh

FORMER Green Party leader Trevor Sargent has been ordained a deacon in the Church of Ireland Diocese of Cashel, Ferns & Ossory.

The ceremony, conducted by Bishop Michael Burrows, took place in Shillelagh on Saturday last.

The former TD for Dublin North, 57, the now Reverand Sargent was appointed Minister of State for Food in the Fianna Fáil/Green Party coalition.

He lost his North Dublin seat in 2011 and subsequent­ly moved to Wexford with his wife, Áine Neville, where they are organic farmers.

He was always an active member of his church during his earlier careers as a teacher and politician, and establishe­d a breakfast prayer group in Leinster House during his time as a TD.

Since leaving politics, he has studied theology in Trinity College Dublin and is expected to complete his MA in Divinity next year. He will serve as deacon in the Tullow Group of Parishes.
