CARNEW EMMETS HOLLYWOOD 1-07 0-08

HOLLYWOOD and Carnew Emmets made the trip to Aughrim for the final game in Group 1 of the D’Arcy Sand Intermediate football championship which formed part of a double bill with Rathnew and Annacurra on Saturday evening last.

With both teams already qualified for the knockout stages of the campaign - Hollywood toping the group, while Carnew Emmets were already assured off a quarter-final place no matter what the outcome – this left nothing but the bragging rights at stake.

In reality, there was very little between the teams with the only goal of the match being scored by Seanie Kinsella, which paved the way for victory for Tom Darcy’s side.

The west Wicklow side under former county selector Mick Murray were first out of the traps which saw two attacks but they squan- dered scoring chances. They continued to take the game to their opponents and they hit a golden spell with three unansweredpoints through Peader Traynor, Garreth Bell and attacking half -back Mikie Healy to leave Hollywood leading by three points to no score after seven minutes.

With both defences on top, ten minutes elapsed without a score with some bad misses on both sides.

Finally, a Hollywood attack saw the hard-working Garret Bell win possession and a free which the full-forward slotted over the ba.

After both sides missed a scoring chance each, a move that was started in their own defence ended with a free being awarded and John Kavanagh opened the Wexford border side’s account.

This brought a quick response from Hollywood with former county star Tomas Burke replying with a point to leave Hollywood ahead by 0-05 to 0-01, after 20 minutes.

With play flowing from end to end and wides being recorded by both teams, Carnew rallied as they fought back to reduce the deficit with Brendan McCrea scoring a great point from play while another attack saw John Kavanagh score his second point from a free.

Not for the first time in the game Hollywood responded and were left to rue a golden opportunity when Joe Glennon found himself inside the Carnew defence but the alert Cormac Doyle pushed the ball around the posts which resulted in a 45 which Peader Traynor pointed as the half-time whistle blew to leave Hollywood worthy leaders on a score of 0-06 to 0-03.

The opening minutes of the second half saw Carnew take the game to their opponents. The first attack resulted in a 45 and two further attacks saw the men in blue and gold squander these chances with three wides in a row.

Dual player Jack Doyle split the Hollywood defence and was fouled and Cillian Gilligan pointed the free. With what pressure Carnew had on the Hollywood defence it was only a matter of time before more scores would come and Cillian Gilligan and midfielder Justin House added a point each to bring the sides level for the first time on a score of 0-06 each 10
