DELGANY SOCIETY HOSTS FINAL SHOW OF THE YEAR

THE DELGANY and District Horticultu­ral Society held its final show of the year, the Dahlia Show, last Saturday at St Patrick’s Primary School in Greystones.

The array of dahlia, of every variety and colour, filled the benches at this show.

The winner of the Silver Medal, Bronze Medal and the Bray HS Perpetual Cup were awarded to Trevor Stevenson of Bride’s Glen. Other trophy winners in the dahlia classes included Catherine Coveney, Ellen O’Neill and Ian Killeen, all from Greystones.

This show also had classes for sweet pea, other flowers and shrubs, plants grown in containers, vegetables and fruit. The winners among these classes were John Warren, Malahide, who won the silver medal of the society for a collection of vegetables, and Carole O’Riordan, Bray, who won the Mrs Jury Cup for a collection of cherry tomatoes and the Rowan Cup for two bunches of black grapes.

In the Junior classes there were entries from Lochlan Gulliver and Vanessa Gulliver (Greystones) and Emma Desouza (Bray). The winner, for an arrangemen­t of garden flowers, all named, was awarded to Vanessa Gulliver.

The show also had a baking element with nine classes including soda breads, scones, apple tart, tea brack, marmalade, strawberry and raspberry jam.

The overall winner with the most points scored was Mary Ann Douglas of Kilcoole. She also won the Goulding Cup for best exhibit in these classes.

The society was very pleased with the number of exhibitors being 39 with 326 exhibits on the benches. There were some new exhibitors too which was encouragin­g and organisers hope to encourage more people to take part in 2018.

The AGM of the society will be held in St. Patrick’s Recreation Centre, Church Road, Greystones on Wednesday, October 11, at 8 p.m., followed by a lecture at 8.30 p.m.. ‘Wild Flowers of Ireland’ will be presented by author and botanist Zoe Devlin.
