Goals costly for Avondale

HOLLYWOOD AVONDALE 4-09 1-10

HOLLYWOOD took on Avondale in the quarter-final of the Philip Doyle Junior ‘B’ football championship in Ashford on Saturday last.

The old adage of ‘goals win games’ was proven to be very much the case here, as right from the throw-in John Mooney sent in a missile to Brian Flynn who flicked on to John Burke to drill to the roof of the net with only 15 seconds on the clock.

That was the start of things to come as Hollywood racked up 1-03 before Avondale managed to get their first score which came through Benny Byrne.

Hollywood were far more the hungrier team when on the attack and they earned themselves a penalty but Darrren Beavor was like an Olympic diver as he got to his bottom corner to force it out for a 45.

Avondale tried to get into the game after that but couldn’t take their chances. Craig Byrne was showing well for the Dales but there were six balls in total dropped into the keeper’s hands in the opening half.

Then, just before the break, Hollywood found the net again, this time by stylish wing forward Ross Tyrell to leave it 2-06 to 0-03 at half-time.

Avondale made a change at the break when they brought in Steven Langan for Conor Penn. The Dales had a strong wind behind them in the second half and both teams exchanged a brace of points early on.

Nathan O’Sullivan was putting in a man of the match performance from wing back and caused havoc every time he got his chance to get forward.

Avondale dug deep and Craig Byrne, who had a great second half of his own, tagged on three points himself early on.

But their rally was short lived as the Hollywood men got their third goal and you could see the heads starting to fall around the field.

It didn’t stop there. Up the line again came O’Sullivan on another galloping run and he got himself into the box only to be took down for penalty number two.

This time they made no mistake and Keith Peppard slotted it home.

The game as good as over with many looking for the whistle when Avondale won a penalty of their own and Craig Byrne, with a sweet strike to bring his tally of the day to 1-06, lashed home.

The man in charge brought it to a close with a score line of 4-09 to 1-10 in favour of Hollywood.
