KWWIBA
Castlemitchell and Abbey Bowls provided a novel pairing in this first round clash in division 5 of the indoor bowling league on Tuesday, September 5.
Although the Castlemitchell club have been competing in the higher divisions for some years this is the first time they have entered a second team to take part in the league competition.
Abbey Bowls who hail from the Abbeyleix (Co. Laois) area and surrounding district submitted an application at the Executive Council Meeting last May for entry to the KWWIBA competitions.
Due to no structured competitions in their own area their application was unanimously passed.
Their home matches are played in the parish hall in Clough, five or six kilometres outside Ballacolla. By the way Clough is pronounced ‘Cluck’ by the locals.
Castlemitchell have the honour to be the first team of the Kildare West Wicklow Association to travel and play a league match in Clough. A hard game to call as both teams would be very inexperienced, with most of the visiting team only playing the game for a number of weeks.
Whereas Abbey Bowls although inexperienced at this level had at least some game time by competing in tournaments and had been giving a good account of themselves.
Mat A: There was never much between the sides for about two-thirds of the game with only a couple of scores separating the teams, with the lead swapping from one to the other in that period.
It was only in the last five ends that the home team saw off the challenge of the visitors and recorded a deserved win on a score of 16/8.

Castlemitchell: Breda Cuddy, Tony Hyland, Tommy Harris and John Cuddy.
Mat B: A really competitive game on this mat with a good display of bowling by both teams. In the early stages it looked as if the home team would pull away and make for a one-sided affair.
But once the visitors settled they came more and more into the match and at the half-way mark they were only trailing by three scores.
Again Abbey Bowls slowly increased the margin to six and one felt that Castlemitchell were beginning to drift out of the game. But great credit for their perseverance and fighting qualities, and their great comeback they now had reduced the margin to the minimum of one score. But the home team responded and increased their lead to two scores to edge over the line on a score of 11/9.
This was very enjoyable and a great match to watch and was played by two very sporting teams.
Abbey Bowls take all five points while Castlemitchell go home empty handed but can hold their heads up high after a gallant display in their first league match.

BRAY BOWLS
This week saw all summer bowling leagues finish up.
On Wednesday last our ladies Division 1 team completed their programme with a home win over Shankill. The team finished very comfortably in the middle of the table.
Wednesday was also a great night for our Division 6 team who despite losing away to CYM finished runners up in the division. Damien and the team can take a bow for the great season.
Saturday saw the ladies team away to Railway Union and unfortunately they were on a different track to the home team.
They did however finish in the middle of the table.
The first of the club championship finals took place last Saturday and in the Men’s Championship victory went to Christy McEvoy who defeated Brian Walshe by 21 shots to 15.
This was Christy’s fourth victory in the blue riband event. You can head off on the holiday now Christy with a smile on your face.
In the 4 Bowl Pairs competition a four hour marathon saw Eddie Condren and Owen Byrne claim a 1 shot victory over Michael Dunne and Dave McMahon.
This week sees three more finals taking place with the action kicking off on Monday at 16.00 hours with the 2 Bowl Singles Final between Dave McMahon and Pat Raftery.
The 2 Bowl pairs is also down for decision with Eoghan Brady and Ger Minogue taking on Christy McEvoy and Eddie Condren. Thursday at 16.00 hours sees the Handicap Singles coming to a conclusion with John Dunne pitting his wits against that man Christy McEvoy again.
Finally congrats to John Reynolds on winning the club lotto this week.
WICKLOW ROVERS
Our senior men got back to winning ways when they made the long journey to Drogheda to take on Boyne Rovers and they returned to Wicklow with a good 3-1 victory.
Gareth Murphy with his first of the season set the lads on their way but the home side levelled shortly after.
The lads showed great character and regained the lead with another first of the season, this time it was Peter Finnegan and it was 2-1 to Wicklow.
The lads put the icing on the cake when Maurice Dunne netted his third of the season when he converted from the penalty spot. This was a great result for the lads, to come home after a long journey with all three points is a great feeling and makes the journey worthwhile.
The senior ladies recorded a comprehensive 10-0 win over Castletown Belles at Whitegates in the semi final of the inter 3 Subsidiary cup last week.
The girls dominated from the start as they clinically beat the away side. Niamh O’Brien fired home an excellent double hat-trick with Rachel Bolger netting a hat-trick also, Mel Clarke completed the ten goal haul in what was an excellent all round team, performance from the girls.
They will now meet Donnycarney in the final.
Midweek junior action saw the 14A’s get their campaign off to a winning start when they defeated Avonmore 12-0, Jordan Younger fired in four goals, Willoughby Woods nabbed a hat-trick, Adam Keirns scored a brace with Callum Gibney, Tom Hodgkinson and Mark Hodgkinson scoring one each.
Friday night saw the under 14B’s go down 5-2 to a strong Arklow Celtic side, Tim and Zak Hastie hit the Rovers goals in a game in which the scoreline could have been a lot closer.
On Saturday the 12A’s maintained their good start when they recorded a comfortable 7-0 win over Greystones United. The game saw Charlie Czwalina, Brian McCaul and Joshua Bishop all score two a piece with Jack Macklin completing the seven goal haul in a clinical display from the lads.
The 11A’s playing at under 12 went down 4-1 to a good Enniskerry side, the lads were more than a match for their opponents for a large part of the game and gave it their all, Conor Williams netted for Rovers.
Our 13A’s made it two wins from two without conceding a goal winning 9-0 against local rivals Wicklow Town.
Stephen Gormley led the way with a fantastic hat-trick, brothers Louis and Oscar Malcolmson notched a brace each with Sam Christie and Jack Noble adding singles in what was an excellent all round team performance.
The 16’s recorded their first point of the season when they drew 2-2 with Arklow United. In a closely fought encounter Nathan Sullivan claimed his fourth goal in two games with Paul Marah nabbing his first of the season.
Sunday’s action saw the 12B’s make it two wins from two when they beat Avonmore 2-1 with goals from their twin strike force of Evan Conyard and Ben Lyons in what was another impressive team performance.
The 12C’s went down 7-3 to a strong Enniskerry team. Their goalscorers on the day were Shea Bolt, Sammy Doyle and Finnlay Davies.
Our 13B’s got their season off to the perfect start with a 3-1 home win over Arklow United.
After falling behind early in play the lads came roaring back with three unanswered goals from Charlie Phelan, Peter Dunne and Ryan McConnell.
The 14A’s continued their impressive start when then defeated Coolboy Rangers 6-1 at Whitegates.
Two goals each from Conor Hunter and Jordan Younger and one a piece from Callum Gibney and Tom Hodgkinson accounted for their six goal haul on the day and another highly impressive performance.
The club’s Last Man Standing competition is back, the competition will start on the weekend of the 14th of October.

AVONMORE FC
Arklow Town U11s v. Avonmore U-11s: Avonmore under 11’s kicked off their season with a tough game away to Arklow Town.
Matthew Heath had our first chance but Arklow piled on the pressure and scored first.
Avonmore fought back well with a good cross from Luke Joynt, allowing Matthew Heath to score with a header. Soon after, Tyler Byrne broke free and smashed the ball into the back of the net 2-1 Avonmore.
In the second half we were under a lot of pressure but Darcy, Lewis, Naoise, Cathal and David kept Arklow out.
With minutes to go after great work by Talan, Matthew chipped the ball over the keeper to earn a well deserved 3-1 result!
Avonmore U-12s A v. Newtown United U-12s: Our U-12A team hosted Newtown in a sunny Tullylusk in their first competitive match of the season.
With a few lads out with injuries, we were down to one sub. Starting strong, we put pressure on the Newtown backs straight away. Their goalkeeper was in top form however and cleaned up everything that came his way.
We continued to press hard and were soon rewarded with a free kick, which Gavin Cullen sweetly tucked away into the bottom right hand corner.
Leading one nil into the break, Newtown came at us hard in the second half.
Keeping our heads, we pressed forward again and deservedly got a second from a great volley off the foot of George Oxley.
We were unlucky not to add to our scoreline as Ethan Tarmey and Kian Fluskey narrowly missed the target.
A well deserved win and a great start to our season. We would like to welcome our two new players to this team, Kian Fluskey and Joe Sinnott, best of luck lads.

Underage teams: The under 19s play their final league game of the season away to Galway FC on Saturday, 16th September at 1.00pm in East United’s ground. The Shield competition for the under 19s will begin the following weekend.
The under 17 Academy team were defeated 2-0 by Cork City at the Academy grounds last Sunday. The under 17s are away to Kerry in Mounthawk Park in Tralee on Sunday, 17th September. Kick off is 2.00pm.
The under 15s beat UCD 4-0 away last Saturday. Goal scorers were Stephen Sweeney, Ross Molloy (2) and Festy Ebosele. The under 15 Academy team are at home to St. Kevin’s Boys on Saturday 16th. Kick off at the Academy Grounds is 2.00pm.
Player of the month: Hugh Douglas was voted the player of the month for August.
Supporters bus to Derry: The next away game is against Derry City on Sunday, 24th September. The Seagulls club will run a bus to this game. Seats can be booked by text to 0879968969. Bus will depart at 8.00am from the Carlisle Grounds with a stop in Monaghan on route. Fares for Seagulls Club members are Adults €20, Student (Age 15-17) €15, Schoolchild (under 15) €10. Non-club members €5 extra.
NEWTOWN JUNIORS
All five of our teams who were in action played last Saturday with a varying degree of success.
Our U8’s travelled to play Glencormac United and they played a very good game with players such as Aaron Nolan, Tyler Doyle, Nathan Donohoe and Gerry Hoban all played well. The U10’s edged out Greystones away in a nine-goal thriller. Goalscorers were Aidan Heffernan (3), Sebastian Anton and Max Roche (pen). Among those who starred were Aaron Roy and Daniel Eager. The U11’s also won in Greystones but it was a little more comfortable as goals from Cathal O’Toole (3), Dylan Dunleavy (2), Cormac Chance, PJ Duffy, Rose Kelly Tynan and an own goal secured the victory. Among those who starred were Brooklyn Doyle, Matthew Doyle and Evan Fahey.
No joy for the U12’s away to Avonmore as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat. Despite the result the team played reasonably well and there were good displays from Aaron Hackett, Jack Coughlan and Grace Murphy. Plenty of honest effort from the U16’s at home to a very strong Wicklow Town team but unfortunately the Town inflicted a very heavy defeat on our guys.
The team badly need some reinforcements, as the squad is thin in numbers at present.

With the Development Squad back this coming weekend all our teams from U8’s up to U16’s are back in training.
Speaking of the teams we are looking for people to help us out and get involved in assisting the club in a number of roles.
We have a very small group of coaches/committee members and they all do great work. If you think you could help us by taking a team or being an assistant coach, help with the fundraising within the club please contact the Secretary at 0876987653 or by Email to hughienolan@gmail. com or contact any of our coaches or committee members or private message the club’s Facebook or Twitter pages. In the past couple of weeks our appeal for extra coaches and committee members seems to have bore fruit as a couple of people have expressed an interest in helping out with the Under 8’s and also getting involved with admin/fund-raising within the club. We are still looking for helpers be it as coaches or on the committee and again I’ll repeat it would involve no more than a couple of hours per week. Also if there is any teenagers who would be interested in getting involved in coaching please contact our Secretary and we will assist in any way. We will be holding a number of club registration evenings over the coming 7-10 days and we can announce that the club has decided to freeze Membership fees again so this year’s fees will take in the combined “short season” and “long season”. The fees will be as follows; 1 child - €70 2 children - €120 3 children - €150.
All players must be registered or will not be allowed play games and a €25 deposit per player is required on registration night. The club will absorb the extra costs the club will incur this season but all club members will be expected to assist and support all fundraisers the club may run. Our members are usually excellent in the area of fundraising and I’m sure that will continue in the future.
