Winners of the safe cycling Road Safety Art Competition

-

THE winners of the 2017 Wicklow County Council Primary School Road Safety Art Competition have been announced.

Pupils from Arklow, Rathdrum and Hollywood made up the winners list.

In May of this year Wicklow County Council invited students to participate in the competition, with a theme of ‘Safe Cycling in Wicklow’, to coincide with the Tour de Leinster, a four-day, 600km cycle across Leinster to raise funds for Down Syndrome Ireland.

The race took place earlier this month, passing through Blessington, Valleymount, Laragh, Rathdrum, Woodenbridge, Avoca and Arklow.

Linda McDonald, Road Safety Officer, presented the winners with their prizes on Thursday last during the Laragh stage of the tour. The fifth class winner was Ciara Kelly from St John’s SNS in Arklow, while the fourth class award was won by Ava Breen from Our Lady’s NS in Rathdrum. Paula Kowal from St John’s SNS in Arklow was the third class winner. Second class winner was Erin Kelly from Hollywood NS, while Taylor O’Neill from Our Lady’s NS in Rathdrum was the winner among the first class entries.

Each winner was presented with a plaque and art materials while the two overall winners, Ciara Kelly and Ava Breen, both received cycling jerseys.

Mark O’Doherty from Down Syndrome Ireland also presented the five winners with a jersey on the day.
