September 1997
COUNCILLORS in Wicklow town are all aflush as to whether or not they should invest in a super loo for the county town.
Several Councillors expressed concern at this week’s meeting of Wicklow Town Council after Assistant County Manager, Hubert Fitzpatrick, revealed that the facility would cost over £50,000. Concern too was expressed at the location of the facility beside the new-look council offices at Quarantine Hill.
Cllr Liam Kavanagh and Cllr Robert Kearns both said they had received representations from local residents who were concerned with the social implications of the move. It was asked at the meeting could the proposed new visitors centre not provide a public toilet.
Town Clerk, Frank O’Toole, said he had spoken with the developers of this project ad they were not in favour of providing a public toilet.
Cllr Jim Giff asked could the new toilet not be built as a separate unit while still being incorporated in the new council office plans.
