INDOOR BOWLING

Kildare West Wicklow Indoor Bowling Association (KWWIBA)

Ardclough Recover From Poor Start In League Campaign - Brownstown travelled across the county to take on Ardclough in this Division 1 game on Monday 18th hoping to continue with the form they produced against Rathmore in their first round league game at home where they took all five points.

The good start was a major boost for their confidence especially after barely avoiding relegation last season.

Taking on Ardclough in their own patch is always a daunting task, as most teams will know from passed experiences.

Playing Catch Up - Mat 1 was a very competitive match with both sides very evenly matched.

The home team were the first to score and went ahead by a score of two, within a couple of ends the visitors were level.

On the next couple of ends it was Brownstown that took the lead for the first time with a score of one on each end.

Shortly after Ardclough were back in front again and by the tenth end had increased their lead to five.

The visitors fought back to close the gap to three scores, but again their opponents increased their lead, but this time it was six scores separating the teams and Brownstown now found themselves in the situation of playing catch up.

For the remainder of the game it was score for score and no matter how hard Brownstown tried they could not reduce the margin and Ardclough ran out winners on a score of 16/10.

Ardclough: Leo Tiernan, Tony Maguire, Brian Cullen and Dom Maguire.

Brownstown: Eilish Vardy, Moira Behan, Cathal Malone and Antoinette Doyle.

Ardclough Annihilate Opponents In Poor Contest - Mat 2: This is a game that Brownstown will want to forget and erase from memory as quickly as possible as Ardclough completely annihilated them on the night in a poor contest.

They never seem to come to the pitch of the game at all and by the halfway stage the game was completely beyond redemption.

With the score standing at 16/0 before the visitors opened their account with a score of two, and followed with a score of one on the next end a mini revival might look on the cards. This was short lived however as Ardclough again increased the difference to sixteen scores.

With four ends left to play Brownstown managed to win three of these, but at that stage the home side had probably eased back on the throttle and ran out convincing winners on a score of 20/7.

In fairness to the visitors they kept trying to the bitter end, it was just one of those times when the team as a whole just didn’t perform on the night.

rdclough will be delighted with the five points after their disastrous start in their first match against Kildare. Brownstown will be left wondering where it all went wrong in this one.

Ardclough: Margaret Fogarty, Noel Cassidy, Loreto Farrell and Ben Maguire.

Brownstown: Lily Higgins, Frank Breen, Mary Stynes and Michael McMahon.

Recent league results (home team first):

Division 1: Caragh 3, Kildare 2; Ardclough 5, Brownstown 0; Kill CBC 3, Castlemitchell 2.

Division 2: Rathangan 5, Blessington 0; Rathcoffey 0, Coill Dubh 5. Division 3: Hollywood 5, Kildare 0. Division 4: Rathcoffey 2, Allen 3. Division 5: Clane/Staplestown 0, Abbey Bowls 5; Castlemitchell 2, Balyna 3; Allenwood 3, Kildare 2.

WICKLOW ROVERS

The senior men progressed to round two of the Leinster Junior cup when they had a comfortable 7-0 win over Kilkenny side Callan United on Sunday.

The lads showed their intent from the first whistle creating several clear cut openings.

They went in at the break 2-0 up with goals from Gareth Murphy and Mark O’Sullivan, the only surprising thing was the deficit wasn’t bigger.

The second half was one way traffic with Rovers pushing home their superiority with a further five goals from Maurice Dunne, Alan Delaney, Mark Johnson, Luke Byrne and Peter Finnegan.

The pleasing thing for the Rovers management was they had seven different goalscorers plus they kept a clean sheet.

It was a clinical display from the lads and now they need to bring that form to their league games to climb up the table.

The under-17 B team kicked off their season away to Ashford Rovers and lost 5-2, they faced an uphill task when they fell three behind in the first half.

They did come out in the second period and put it up to the home side, they pulled one back when Luke Durac scored but the home restored their three goal margin with a fourth.

Joseph O’Shea nabbed a second for the lads but it was the home side who finished off the scoring when they got their fifth.

On Friday night, the 15Bs went down 7-2 away to Arklow Celtic, the lads gave it their all in the quest for their first points of the campaign but it wasn’t to be, Adam Shepherd and Keevan Doyle hit the back of the net for Rovers on the night.

Saturday junior action saw the under-12 Bs continue their impressive start to the season when they made it three wins from three with a 7-0 win over Ashford Rovs, Ben Lyons made it nine goals in three games with his second hat-trick of the season. Evan Conyard moved onto five in the scoring charts with a brace while there were firsts of the season for Ben Harris and Peter Quinn.

The under-14Cs went down to a heavy defeat to a very strong Arklow Town A side but to their credit they never dropped their heads and battled right up till the final whistle.

Sunday’s junior action saw the 13Bs go down narrowly 2-1 away to Ashford, the teams were tied at 1-1 going into the dying minutes before the home side got the all important winner.

Ryan McConnell scored the Wicklow goal.

The 14Bs were involved in an eight-goal thriller away to Glencormac. Unfortunately for the lads they came out the wrong side of a 5-3 scoreline, the lads didn’t have much luck on the day. Alexander Gallet, Zach Harris and an own goal accounted for their goals.

Our under-15 As have made it two wins from two games, nine goals scored and none conceded.

They recorded an excellent 4-0 away win over Coolboy Rgrs, Josh Odlum got off the mark for the season in style when he netted a magnificent hat-trick with Connor Lewins also netting his first of the campaign with a single to record a very impressive victory.

If it was excitement you were look- ing for Whitegates Sunday morning was the place to be.

Our under-16s and local neighbours Wicklow Town served up a feast of entertaining football in what was a great advert for the game.

he match ended all square at 4-4 in a game that kept the watching supporters on the edge of their seats right till the final whistle.

Nathan Sullivan fired in a brace, Tom O’Shea and Aidan Hennessy both notched one a piece.

This was a humdinger of a local derby, both sets of players and their management teams done their clubs proud, well done to everyone involved.

BRAY BOWLS

The club championships were completed last weekend when the ladies took centre stage and one lady in particular stole the show and had an unforgettable weekend.

The ladies championship which is the blue riband event for the ladies was won by Breda Keogh who defeated Pamela O’Leary in a very exciting final.

Breda was back on the rink for the 2 Bowl Singes final against the wily warrior that is Phyllis Brett and once again Breda emerged victorious.

The hat-trick was achieved when Breda and her partners Martin Delaney and John Dunne won the mixed triples with victory over Patrick Brosnan/ Margaret Doran/Colm Murphy.

I hope there is enough space on the sideboard Breda for all those trophies!

In the 2 Bowl Pairs, Phyllis Brett and Betty Lester had a hard earned win over Marge O’Leary and Bernie Tracey.

Well done to all the winners and thanks to Roddy, Owen and Marge for organising all the competitions.

Christy McEvoy and Breda Keogh will now go forward and represent the club in next year’s Champion of Champions competition.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

Plenty of football for our teams last weekend and as usual there were plenty of thrills and spills.

Our under-8s hosted near neighbours St Anthony’s in a keenly contested game.

Among the players who starred were David McCormack, Aaron Nolan, Colin Healy and Bobby Spillane. It was great to meet up with Alana Synnott who played a starring role for Antos and was a member of our Development Squad for the past three years. Well done Alana.

Our under-9s made the short trip to Greystones and played out a thrilling series of games down near the sea.

Among those who starred for the team were Leon O’Connor, Lucas Dowdall, Oisin Duffy and Leighton Byrne.

Our under-10s had their best performance of the season so far with an excellent win away to Wicklow Rovers Blue. Pat Carey, Max Roche, Nichita Neaga and Ryan Collins got their names on the scoresheet while Mikey Synnott, Sebastian Anton and Kacey Kelly were among the players who played well.

The under-11s had a fine win away to Ashford where Matthew Doyle, Cathal O’Toole, Cormac Chance, Dylan Dunleavy and a first ever goal for Brooklyn Doyle did the damage in an excellent team display.

Our under-12s yet again put in a trojan effort without reward as they lost narrowly 2-0 at home to Arklow Utd.

The team can’t be faulted for effort, but at the moment the ball isn’t going their way, but if they continue to work hard, the results will surely come.

Our under-14s bounced back from last week’s poor performance to win 7-2 at home to Arklow Town A. Bobby Dowling scored a hat-trick (1 pen), Charlie Gregory notched 2, and there were singles for Charlie Sullivan and Luke Breen. Best players were Rebecca Gillan and Charlie Gregory.

It is hoped every club will enter at least one participant to take on the Kube. The entry fee is €300 per participant, which each club must pay themselves or can, get sponsored. Sponsored cards are available at present through any committee member. As yet the club haven’t decided who will take on the Kube on behalf of the club but we have a couple of interested parties.

Anything over €300 raised on the sponsor cards goes to the club and our participant/s stands to win up to €1,500 for the club depending on how she or he does. Further information in the coming weeks.

We have one player from the club celebrating his birthday this coming week and he is Nichita Neaga from the U10’s. Happy birthday Nichita from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C.

Last Saturday night in the Parkview Hotel, the Newtowtownmountkennedy Forum organised the first ever Community Awards event. This turned out to be a great night where many people received awards for their great work etc in the community for many years. In the Sportsman category, which Newtown Juniors F.C. sponsored, the winner was ex-junior Keith Dalton now of Bohemians F.C.

Our Development Squad/U10’s coach Lauren Nolan won the Youth Leader award while Bobby Dowling from the under-13s took the Young Achiever award. Well done to all the winners and to all the nominees many who have connections with our club.
