INDOOR BOWLS

Exciting Finish To Ryston Tournament - The Ryston bowling tournament concluded on Saturday, August 23, with the semi-finals and finals in both the Cup and Shield.

Tournaments seem to be getting more popular and going from strength to strength especially judging by the upsurge in entries this year in all tournaments.

Again this was another event that attracted a very large entry.

In fact, it surpassed all previous entries for this tournament with a total of 38 teams.

Played in the spacious Ryston Sports and Social Centre which could accommodate eight mats it was able to be run over four dates, starting on Wednesday 20th and continuing on Thursday and Friday with the completion as stated above on Saturday 23rd.

Shield semi-finals - In the first Shield semi-final, Donard-The Glen saw off the challenge of Allen 2 on a scoreline of 15/8.

In the second semi-final it was Kill Community Bowling Club against Rathcoffey 2.

This was a close contest up to the last quarter, but from there on Kill CBC, with a succession of scores, saw off their opponents with a finishing scoreline of 19/9.

Cup semi-finals - In the first Cup semi-final, Kildare 3 just edged out Allen 1to win by three scores after a mighty game on a score of 16/13.

In the second semi-final, Kildare 1 fell victims to a rampant Rathmore side in a one-sided contest.

Shield final - Rank outsiders and the surprise packets to reach the final, Donard-The Glen were up against a very experienced Kill CBC team who were winners of the Cup last year.

There was no reading of the script by the west Wicklow side as they settled into the game immediately and had their opponents in real trouble from the beginning.

With only a third of the game played it was Donard-The Glen that were the more impressive team.

Indeed, it looked as if a shock was on the cards as the rank outsiders showed no fear of their more accomplished opponents as they held a lead of eight scores to one at this point.

Kill CBC, with patience and coolness, started to eat into the lead and by the tenth end had taken a lead of 9/8, holding their opponents scoreless for five ends.

On the next end, Donard-The Glen were back on level terms and on the 12th end were 10/9 to the good.

It was on the run in that Kill CBC showed all their experience to kill of the challenge and were a very relieved team to survive such a massive battle and get over the line on a score of 15/12

Kill CBC: Phyllis Burke, Josie Garvey, Donal Burke and Johnny Flynn.

Donard-The Glen: Pat O’Neill, Harry Mangan, Michael O’Reilly and Alan McEvoy.

Cup final - This was a contest between the ‘Big Guns’ of the game, Rathmore against Kildare 3.

Rathmore were the slight favourites in this tie due to their consistent and impressive form throughout the competition.

It was Kildare that got the better start with a score of three, however it was short lived as Rathmore in as many ends had levelled up the contest. Rathmore outscored their opponents on the next five ends by five score to one to lead by 8/4.

It was the next end that ultimately was the deciding moment of the game.

With Kildare holding three scores and still a bowl to play, but alas, disaster struck, it looked like the perfect shot but unfortunately it sent the Jack of the mat, thus conceding three penalty scores to their opponents as this was the third time to happen.

Now instead of the score being 8/7, the turnaround gave Rathmore a massive advantage with the score now standing at 11/4. Kildare fought hard to retrieve the situation but it was more or less score for score for the remainder of the game and Rathmore ran out the victors on a scoreline of 15/7.

This was a very good final; it was the one unfortunate incident that was the game changer and made the finishing score look very deceiving.

Rathmore: Mary Hayden, Ann Shaw, Helen Feane and Frank Feane.

Kildare 3: Jimmy Rowan, Margaret Gorry, Frank Connolly and Fintan Downey.

Ann Field (Ryston) thanked John Murphy (Caragh) for always being on hand to umpire proceedings throughout the competition and to their sponsors, to all the business people that supported the club, the volunteers and especially to the catering staff for their commitment and dedication and hard work throughout the tournament. Go raibh maith agaibh go leir.

WICKLOW ROVERS

Our under-17 DDSL team recorded a good 2-1 win over Knocklyon Utd in what was a tough encounter, it was two well taken goals from David Ghiurcan early in the game that proved to be the all important scores to earn all three points.

The under-17As made it two wins from two when they beat Aughrim Rgrs 5-0. Dylan Frazer made it three in two games when he netted a double.

Tom O’Shea also netted a brace for his first goals of the season with Miguel Moralejo scoring one.

Our under-17Bs recorded their first victory when they had an excellent 4-3 away win over Arklow Town. Nathan Wynne hammered home a fantastic hat-trick with Nicky Kearney notching the other to claim three excellent points.

In Saturday’s junior action, the 12As went goal crazy when they fired 10 past Coolboy Rangers, Jack Macklin helped himself to four, Brian McCaul plundered three, Joshua Bishop nabbed a brace with Dan Kavanagh completing the 10-goal haul for a 10-0 victory in what was an excellent team performance.

The under-11s playing at under 12 gained all three points in a 2-0 win over Arklow Utd. Senan O’Donovan and a second of the season from Conor Williams was enough to give them a fine victory and all three points.

Our under-12Bs remain unbeaten when they drew 1-1 with Roundwood who are also unbeaten and have a similar record to the lads.

A sixth of the season for Evan Conyard proved to be the all important goal to earn a point and leave these two teams neck and neck at the top of the group.

The under-12Cs showed improvement in defeat when they lost 5-2 to Glencormac, with a bit of luck the result could have been even closer as the lads battled well through out. Luke Dunne and Cian Byrne scored their goals.

Another team to go crazy were the under-13As as they knocked an astonishing 17 goals past Carnew in a 17-1 victory.

Oscar Malcolmson netted a personal haul of five goals, Kai Fitzsimons followed closely with four goals with Sam Christie nabbing three. Stephen Gormley and Jack Noble both scored doubles with Louis Malcomson completing the rout with a single.

On Sunday, the under-14 girls were unlucky to go out of the Molly O’Toole Cup when they lost on penalties to last season’s league champions Maynooth Town.

The match ended up a thrilling 3-3 draw after extra time and then went to the dreaded shoot out which Maynooth won 4-3.

In the game itself, Molly Sweeney found the net twice with Eve Kelly nabbing one in what was an entertaining tussle between two very good teams.

The under-14Bs gained their first win of the season when they defeated St Anthonys 7-1, Alexander Gallet netted a brace with Ruaidhri Kelly, Javier Ramiro, Robert Cherry, Zak Christie and Tim Hastie all scoring one each.

The 15As made it three wins from three, 15 goals scored and none conceded when they saw off local neighbours Wicklow Town, winning 6-0.

Josh Odlum went one better than last week when he hit the back of the net four times, Conor Leonard and Connor Lewins added singles to give the lads a comfortable victory.

Our under-16s lost 4-3 away to Roundwood, Nathan Sullivan made it eight goals in four games with a double with Tom O’Shea firing home the other.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

Our under-8s played in the WDSL Fives Blitz in Ferndale Park in Arklow last Saturday morning and all present enjoyed their football and had loads of fun. All ten players that played were outstanding.

The under-9s game away to Glencormac was called off.

The under-10s hosted near neighbours St Anthony’s and after racing into a three-goal lead, the away side hit back to score four without reply.

Newtown awoke from their slumber to notch three goals to take the game 6-4.

On the day among those who starred for Newtown were Sebastian Anton, Max Roche and Aaron Roy.

The goals came courtesy of William Valentine (2), Pat Carey, Max Roche, Aidan Heffernan and Ryan Collins.

Mention must also go to the Anto’s two keepers who both pulled off some stunning saves on the day.

A late equaliser from Avonmore denied our under-11s victory away from home as both sides settled for a 3-3 draw.

Newtown’s goals came from Cathal O’Toole, Jack Daly and Cormac Chance.

Our under-12s suffered another defeat, this time to table toppers Enniskerry on a 1-5 scoreline.

Yet again, despite a big effort, the away side punished every mistake the team made.

Max Synnott did strike late on with a fine finish for a consolation for Newtown.

On the day among those who starred were Jack Coughlan, Patrick Martin and Eoghan Fox.

Despite a much-improved display on the last time the two teams met, our under-14s still lost 7-2 away to an excellent Rathnew team.
