The new series of autumn lectures for the Kilmacanog­ue History Society commenced on Tuesday, October 3, in the Glenview Hotel. The guest speaker was Professor Kevin Whelan, who is director of the Keough Naughton Centre, university of Notre Dame in Dublin. The title of the lecture was, ‘Dublin in its Global Setting from the World of Wood to Silicon Valley.’This illustrate­d talk looked at the panoramic history of Dublin from the forests of the ancient clans (The O’Tooles and the O’Byrnes) across the five phases: forest, wood, brick, shadows and silicon. It also included a history of Dublin city during the Viking period, when it was known as a ‘Wood Town.’ It articulate­s the massive expansion of the city from 1600 onwards and the importance of Dublin, today, especially in the context of the Irish economy.

Attention now turns to the November lecture which will take place on Tuesday, November 7, at 8 p.m. in the Glenview Hotel. Titled ‘The History of the National Museum of Ireland’, it will be presented by Patrick Wallace. New members would be welcomed.
