GAEL NA MARA DOMINICAN COLL 4-08 3-09

THE first of the girls Senior football A quarter-finals was played in Pearse’s Park on Friday between Gaelcholáiste na Mara Arklow and Dominican College Wicklow.

Dominican College, who had won the title in four of the past five years, would have been favourites and the first half seemed to go along expected lines.

The Wicklow school did most of the attacking and led by 1-7 to 0-2, the goal coming from the impressive Saoirse O’Reilly. Gaelcholaiste na Mara did finish the first half with 1-2 to leave the score at the interval 1-7 to 1-4 in favour of Dominican College.

The second half followed a different pattern. Gaelcholáiste na Mara made a great start and had a goal from a penalty by Emma Cox within five minutes. Another goal was soon added but Dominican showed their resilience when Niamh Caffrey found the net at the other end almost immediately.

The remainder of the game was a thriller with both teams having their moments. GCM led by 2 points with time running out but DCW mounted some dangerous attacks. However, the Gaelcholáiste defence, with Georgia Earls in inspired form, held out for a two-pointvictory.

Players to impress for the winners include Eimear Kelly, Roisin O’Reilly and Georgia Earls while Leah Cronin, Sarah Evans, Aine Cahill and Saoirse O’Reilly were to the fore for Dominican College.
