Making history in County Wicklow
A FREE Local history day taking place in the Brockagh Resource Centre aims to highlight the important role of local historical societies in County Wicklow and to explore opportunities to support and strengthen this role.
The event is organised as an action of the County Wicklow Heritage Plan and is co-funded by Wicklow County Council and The Heritage Council.
It takes place on Saturday, November 4.
Professor Raymond Gillespie, from Maynooth University Department of History, will be the keynote speaker.
There will also be presentations from Wicklow Library and Archives services on resources available locally, presentations from five local historical societies in County Wicklow and a group workshop session focussed on ideas for strengthening the role of historical societies in a modern day Wicklow.
Registration takes place on the morning of the event at 9.30 a.m.. Deirdre Burns, Heritage Officer, Wicklow County Council, opens proceedings at 10 a.m..
There will be a tea and coffee break from 11 a.m. to 11.30 a.m..
From 11.30 a.m. to 12 noon Catherine Wright, Archivist/ Genealogist, Wicklow County Council, will discuss local history resources in Wicklow.
From 12 noon to 12.20 p.m. David Menzies, Roundwood and District Historical and Folklore Society will talk about early medieval enclosures at Roundwood. Carmel O’Toole, Rathdrum Historical Society, talks about ‘Glenmalure, the wild Mountains of Wicklow, sources and pathways to publishing’ from 12.20 p.m. to 12.40 p.m.. 12.40 p.m. to 1 p.m. will see Jim Rees, Arklow Maritime Heritage Committee, make a presentation on ‘ The Kynoch Explosion 1917- It’s Importance To Wicklow As A Whole.’
Lunch takes place from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. followed by Brian White, Bray Cualann Historical Society, and his presentation on knowing your neighbourhood using maps, trade guides, census returns and other data, lasting until 2.20 p.m..
Rosemary Raughter, Greystones Archaeological and Historical Society, speaks from 2.20 p.m. to 2.40 p.m.. A group workshop takes place from 2.45 p.m. t0 3.45 p.m. and concluding remarks from 3.45 p.m. to 4 p.m..
