A super day held in memory of James

-

THE annual James Byrne Memorial Tournament was held recently at Baltinglass GAA Club and once again it was a wonderful success.

The event is held in memory of the late James Byrne from Grangecon and has become a popular and much anticipated tournament each year.

“We’ve held the James Byrne Memorial Tournament for a good few years now,” said Robert McHugh, of Baltinglass GAA Club. “It’s gone from strength to strength. It’s something that we have tried to build on, especially for the juveniles for them to have something to look forward to at the end of the year,” he added.

The event was coordinated by Ken Riordan and up to 50 young footballers competed on the day with a high number of senior players lending their support and being on hand to present medals after the competitive games.

“It’s a great club day,” said Robert, “All the parents came up and provided the food and the Byrne family always come down and get involved and it’s a really positive learning experience for the young footballers,” he added.

“What we do is, we try to get our senior players involved so they come along and they are on the sideline and they are watching the lads and cheering them on and then they present the medals.

“This year we had John McGrath and Tommy Murphy and a few of the lads and the day is something that all the young players look forward to,” he added.
