Future is very bright after busy weekend at Ashtown Lane!

-

WICKLOW RFC’s minis enjoyed their first full blitz of the season on Sunday October 15.

The under-7s, 8s, 9s and 11s made the short trip down the road to Gorey RFC while Wicklow’s under-10s and 12s welcomed their Gorey counterparts to Ashtown Lane.

Top quality rugby was on display in both venues with the games played in excellent warm conditions.

For Wicklow’s under-7s their trip to Gorey RFC was a momentous occasion as they took to the field for their first com- petitive game of rugby ever. The excitement had been building all week and it did not disappoint. From players going to bed in their jerseys to kids getting up at 4am, this was a special day.

Wicklow fielded 30 of the club’s latest rugby stars. Conditions were perfect for everyone’s debut and lots of running rugby was played.

There were three games running continuously with some champagne rugby on display.

Lots of tries were scored and there were smiling faces on all the players and spectators alike.

Next week, the Under 7s are looking forward to their first ever home game, where there will be more silky skills on display in Ashtown Lane.

Wicklow’s under-8s travelled to Gorey with 18 players to make up two teams and both teams had two evenly contested matches.

This was the first full contact match for both clubs and the standard of tackling was very good for this early stage of the season.

The under-11s took to the road with a large squad of new and experienced players looking to build on their steady start to the season.

Both teams had an opportunity to use the wide open spaces and elected to get the ball wide at every opportunity. There were some frenetic exchanges in free scoring games.

Back in Ashtown Lane, Wicklow’s under-10s were delighted to take on Gorey once again. They fielded three teams and the boys were keen to let loose their competitive energy on the pitch once again. There was great running rugby and it was clear that their skills haven’t softened over the summer.

Two under-12s teams enjoyed their first competitive games on the full width pitch. The Wicklow lads took great advantage of their new-found space and both teams played some sparkling rugby with plenty of action to keep the many spectators enthralled.
