Strong start by Wicklow
FOLLOWING the introduction of the under-14 girls age grade and corresponding Leinster League, the much-anticipated inaugural game for the Wicklow girls saw them getting off to a strong start.
Enniscorthy visited Wicklow RFC on Sunday 15th October were mild autumn weather hinted almost ideal rugby playing conditions.
Both teams were bristling with excitement ahead of their first competitive rugby fixture, indeed for most of them it was probably there first competitive fixture for any team sport.
The short notice given to both teams meant that Enniscorthy struggled to get enough numbers to qualify for the league game, as such the fixture was played with the minimum allowable 10 players per side.
Although a large proportion of the Wicklow team have been playing rugby at mini level for a number of years, this did not deter any of the new team members from stepping up and putting in some fine performances.
Even as the weather deteriorated into rain, it did not affect the handling skills leading to very few dropped balls throughout the game.
In the end experience won out with Wicklow RFC running in 9 trys to Enniscorthy’s 1, the final score was Wicklow 47, Enniscorthy 5.
The match was refereed by Mike Farrell and the ‘Player of the Match’ award was awarded to Jessica Reynolds
