Ardclough recover from poor start in league

Ardclough after a very poor performance in their first game of the season in Division 1 league away from home against Kildare recovered from their poor start taking all five points in their second match against Brownstown.

So their third round tie on Friday, October 6, with home advantage against Allen they would be confident of continuing with their winning ways to propel them further up the table.

Allen on the other hand had to pull out all the stops to secure two points away, to a Castlemitchell side playing in division 1 for the first time after winning promotion from Division 2 last season.

Allen were very unlucky in their home match against Hollywood to only collect one point.

On mat 1 in the early exchanges it looked as if the game was going to turn into a real classic as it was very evenly balanced. The game continued in this fashion up to the sixth end with the home team leading by the slim margin of one score, but from thereon it ceased to be a contest as Ardclough continued to pile score on top of score to run out rather easy and convincing winners on a score of 19/6.

Ardclough: Margaret Fogarty, Noel Cassidy, Loreto Farrell and Ben Maguire.

Allen: Frank Doyle, Robbie Ivers, Esther Mullally and Kevin McCormack.

Mat 2: This was a well-contested match from the beginning with both sides in top bowling form. Allen were first to set the trend with a score of one, but this was immediately cancelled out on the next end.

The next couple of ends belonged to the home side as they raced into the lead on a score of 5/1. Allen weren’t unduly worried with the pressure and fought back to bring the sides level on the sixth end, and indeed went two up on the next end.

Back came Ardclough on the next two ends to bring the sides all square for the second time. It was from this point onwards that the game changed when Ardclough surged ahead by six scores, but the visitors narrowed that lead to four and were still in the game with a fighting chance. The home team were not for wielding and went on to finish off the challenge and ended with a victory on a scoreline of 17/9.

This was a cracking game of bowls regardless of the final result with the scoreboard a bit flattering at the end.

Ardclough move to mid-way in the table while Allen remain second from the bottom. Early days yet with only three rounds played out of 18.

Ardclough: Olivia Maguire, Leo Tiernan, Brian Cullen and Dom Maguire.

Allen: Mary Brennan, Concepta Mullally, Denis Lyons and Ann McCormack.

Recent league results (home team first):

Division 1: Ardclough 5, Allen 0; Hollywood 3, Kill CBC 2; Brownstown 0, Kildare 5; Castlemitchell 5, Rathmore 0; Kildangan 5, Caragh 0.

WICKLOW ROVERS

The senior men travelled to take on Larkview Boys last Friday in the first round of the Polikoff Cup.

Having lost at home to the same opposition a couple of weeks ago in the league going down 2-1 the lads knew they were in for a tough encounter.

What a match it proved to be, it had everything you would expect from a cup tie.

Plenty of exciting football, a bucket full of goals, extra time and the dreaded penalty shootout.

When the final whistle was blown to bring an end to an epic game the teams couldn’t be separated as the match finished 4-4. Luke Byrne, Ciaran McGettigan, Gareth Murphy and Sean Tobin fired home the Rovers goals in a thrilling spectacle.

Then it was on to the dreaded penalty shootout, Rovers held their nerve as they slotted home all five spot kicks with young Rossa Marron in the Rovers goal proving to be the hero with an excellent save from one of Larkview’s penalties. Peter Finnegan, Gareth Murphy, Mark Johnson, Tommy Kelly and Mick Delaney netted from the spot for the lads to seal their place in round two in what was an excellent all-round team performance. Well done to Greg, Denis, Dido and the lads on a great win.

Our DDSL under-17 team had a good 4-3 home win over Celbridge Town.

The teams shared four goals between them in the first fifteen minutes with Celbridge leading twice before Rovers hit back to level through Patrick O’Keane and Luca Rampersaud.

Rovers then went 4-2 up with Luca Rampersaud netting his second and Stuart Cox firing home.

The away side pulled one back but the lads held on to take all three points with a 4-3 victory.

The under-17A team had a bad day at the office when they suffered a heavy 9-0 defeat at the hands of Avonmore in the first round of the Leinster Youths cup, missing a couple of key players didn’t help the lads but this was a game the lads never got going in at all.

Junior action started on Friday night with the under-14Bs going down to Glencormac, Oran Dempsey and Javier Merino notched the goals in a game where the lads could have been a lot closer on the scoreboard.

Saturday’s action saw the 12As defeat Sporting Greystones 9-0, the match marked two hat-tricks, one from Charlie Czwalina and one from Brian McCaul, singles from Tom Donoghue, Jack Macklin and Joshua Bishop completed the scoring.

Our 12Bs suffered their first defeat of the season when they lost 6-2 away to Aughrim Rgrs, Ben Lyons scored his tenth of the season with Luca Sturles hitting the net for the first time.

The under-12D team drew 1-1 with Avonmore in a closely fought game, Joe Culleton fired home his first of the season to earn the lads a share of the spoils.

The 13As made it four wins from four when they defeated local rivals Wicklow Town 5-1 at Finlay Park. An excellent hat-trick from Kai Fitzsimons laid the foundations for this victory with Ross McCrea and Oscar Malcolmson adding one each.

An under strength 15Bs lost 8-1 to Arklow Town, the team were missing several regulars and were always up against it. Donal O’Donoghue fired home a consolation for Rovers.

Sunday’s junior action saw the under-14 girls go down 6-0 away to Mount Merrion, after drawing 4-4 last week with the same opposition the girls the girls were hoping for a better result.

It is all part of the learning process and we’re sure Niall will have the girls back firing on all cylinders in the next game.

Our 13Bs went down away to Arklow Utd by the minimum score when they lost 1-0, the team didn’t play to their normal high standard but still had the chances to get something from the game.

The 14As made their exit from the SFAI cup when they lost 6-4 after extra-time to Kildare side Prosperous Utd, this was a game that got away from the lads as they raced into an early 2-0 lead to give them a great start. Jordan Younger notched a brace with Sean O’Meara and Conor Hunter adding singles.

Our Last Man Standing competition kicked off at the weekend and we had some very high-profile casualties.

Previous winners of the competition Anthony Earls and Hughie Nolan fell at the first hurdle this time around as their selection Chelsea lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace.

Safely through to round two were other previous winners Greg Dunne, Jonathan Lewins, Jim Foley and James Nolan.

Chelsea were the scourge of 37 players who made their exit, 8 players lost out after Arsenal lost 2-1 to Watford, Burnley [3], Everton [2], West Ham [2], Huddersfield [1], Southampton [1] and Newcastle [1] were the teams that let other players down. At the time of going to print we had 99 players definitely through to round 2 with five players hoping to join them if Leicester can beat West Brom in the Monday night game.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

It was another busy weekend for football last weekend as all our teams saw some action.

Due to illness our under-8s had to get a loan of two players from the Development Squad in their games at home to Glencormac Utd.

Those two players, Jake Fitzsimons and Jack Gavin, played starring roles on the day along with regulars Tyler Doyle, David McCormack and Colin Healy.

Our under-9s also played at home and played out an excellent series of games against Greystones B.

On the day among the players who starred were Alex Ryan, JV Kelly and Leon O’Connor.

The under-10s have moved up a couple of sections and despite a good first half showing they found the going tough in the second half away to Ashford Rovers Blue.

However, there was plenty of honest effort and Pat Carey and Nichita Neaga were among those who shone.

Likewise, after their fine results this season the 11s have been moved up to the top section where they played away to Enniskerry Red but unfortunately the game went the way of the home side.

Best for the 11s were Cillian Coffey, Cormac Chance and Dylan Dunleavy.

No luck again for the 12s as they went down 7-2 away to Grey- stones B.

Patrick Martin scored both Newtown goals and he along with Jack Coughlan and Keira Farrelly all battled to the very end of the game.

The under-14s were dealt a double injury blow early in the week when two of their best performers this season so far Ryan Clarke (hand) and Jason Carthy (knee) were ruled out for a number of weeks.

Everyone at the Juniors wish the two lads a speedy recovery and a quick return to action.

However, the team travelled to take on Arklow Town A and they came home with all three points after edging out the home side by the odd goal in nine.

Martin Kelly led the way with a hat-trick while Bobby Dowling and Darragh Heffernan added the others. On the day, Kelly, Shane Synnott and Bogdan Rusu were among the star performers.

The WDSL in conjunction with all the clubs in the league are running a fundraiser, The Kube, on Saturday, November 18, in the Parkview Hotel in Newtown.

It is hoped every club will enter at least one participant to take on the Kube. The entry fee is €300 per participant, which each club must pay themselves or can get sponsored.

Sponsored cards are available at present through any committee member.

As yet the club haven’t decided who will take on The Kube on behalf of the club but we have a couple of interested parties.

Anything over €300 raised on the sponsor cards goes to the club and our participant/s stands to win up to €1,500 for the club depending on how she or he does. We had intended to have one player but it looks like we may be able to put forward two contestants (all will be revealed).

We have two players from the Development Squad celebrating their birthdays in the coming week and they are Donnacha Eager-O’Brien and John Paul Dunleavy. Happy birthday lads from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C.

For further information on all matters Newtown Juniors F.C. please contact the secretary at 0876987653 or by email to hughienolan@gmail.com & you can also follow the club on our Facebook & Twitter pages.
