A man who bought a driving licence from a man in a pub for €250 claimed he didn’t know it was a forgery.

Ian Doyle (61), 39 Kenmare Heights, Greystones, appeared in Wicklow District Court last Tuesday.

Garda Ciara Toolis told the court that she received a report from the Road Safety Authority in early December 2016. There were concerns relating to an application. They suspected that the driving licence attached was fraudulent. This was later confirmed to be the case.

Garda Toolis approached Doyle at his workplace on December 21. She said that he seemed very surprised. As it was so close to Christmas, they agreed to meet afterwards. They met at Bray Garda Station by appointment on January 24.

A man who assaulted two gardaí in a chipper has had the matter adjourned for probation and psychiatric reports.

Gardai received a call to the Bridge Tavern on December 5, 2015.

A member of staff told them that Eric Rice, 6 St Bride’s Road, Wicklow Town, had been in earlier and swung a punch at him.

Garda David Hamblyn, saw Rice sitting in Lina’s takeaway in Wicklow Town at around 10.15 p.m. that night.

‘I parked the car outside the chipper and beckoned him to come talk about the incident,’ said Garda Hamblyn.

‘Mr Rice continued to stare straight ahead. I said to my colleague Ray Hughes, I have to go in to speak to him.’

He said that he walked in and said ‘Hi Eric’ and that Rice stood up and walked towards him in an aggressive manner saying ‘who are you’. He said that Rice began to strike him.

He said that Garda Hughes also came in and tried to restrain the man. There was a struggle and gardaí took out pepper spray, which Rice managed to get a hold of. It was knocked from his hand.

A member of the public also became involved in restraining the man.

The matter was adjourned to December 19.
