WICKLOW ROVERS

Well Storm Brian made his presence felt with a complete wipe out of all WDSL and WFL fixtures at the weekend.

The senior game fixed for Friday failed to go ahead due to the severe high winds.

A couple of games did go ahead on Sunday; our under-17 DDSL team took on Ardmore Rovers and the lads came out on top after a seven-goal thriller winning 4-3.

Luca Rampersaud nabbed a brace to bring his tally to 22 for the season with both Stuart Cox and Stephen Finlay moving onto sixteen for the campaign when they registered a goal a piece in what was a highly entertaining game.

The under-14 girls defeated Peamount United 8-0 in the second round of the Carlton Hotel Cup on Sunday, Justine Cronin turned in a girl of the match performance when she fired home a fantastic four goals, Kara Doyle, Anna Dignam, Abi Farrell and Molly Sweeney all scored one each to complete the eight-goal haul. A special mention goes to Abi Smyth who produced an excellent save in the first half to preserve their clean sheet.

In midweek action our 15As continued their excellent run in local football when they beat Roundwood at Whitegates on Tuesday night.

The lads conceded their first goal in four games but they went on to win 3-1.

They have now won all four games in the shield. In what was a good all round team performance Conor Leonard hit his fourth goal of the season. Stephen Kearns nabbed his second of the campaign with under-14 player Callum Gibney firing home the third.

Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to congratulate Davy and Katriona Rowan on the arrival of baby Josh recently, we wish you all the best of luck, hap- piness and health for the future. Once again, congratulations Davy and Katriona.

The weekend saw the completion of round 2 of our Last Man Standing competition and yet again one of the so called big clubs let a lot of people down. Manchester United’s surprise 2-1 defeat away to Huddersfield saw 29 players exit the competition.

Stoke’s failure to beat Bournemouth losing 2-1 meant another 5 players went out.

A single player went out on Friday night as they pinned their hopes on the not so happy Hammers of West Ham as they were trounced 3-0 at home by Brighton. Chelsea’s somewhat fortunate 4-2 win over Watford saw 36 players progress to round three, 23 players moved on after Manchester City brushed a side Burnley winning 3-0.

Newcastle’s late winner against Crystal Palace was good enough to see four players safely through to the third round.

Finally, one player progressed after Arsenal’s 5-2 victory over Everton on Sunday.

All this means 35 players made their exit from the competition with 64 players going safely through to round three.

Previous winner Jim Foley was the big name causality in round two while previous winners Greg Dunne, Jonathan Lewins and James Nolan all remain standing hoping to become the first person to win the competition for a second time.

Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Eddie McDonnell, Glencormac, County Wicklow who sadly passed away recently.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his daughters Sandra, Paula, Tracy and Carol, his son in law Boodhan who manages our DDSL under-17 team, his granddaughter Lucy who plays for our under-14 girls team and his grandson Luca who plays on our DDSL under-17 team.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time, may he rest in peace.

The club’s weekly junior soccer academy continues every Saturday morning (weather permitting) under the watchful eye of senior club coach Johnny Dunne.

The academy takes places on the all weather pitch on the club grounds at the Whitegates and is open to all kids from the age of three years to eight years.

The academy starts at 11am and finishes at 12. There is no need for registration so you can come along to any week that suits.

Come along and learn the skills of football while having fun and enjoyment, it’s a great way of meeting new friends as you learn the skills as you get prepared for the introduction to participate in organised league football in the coming years.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

Unfortunately Storm Brian, who followed shortly on the heels of Hurricane Ophelia, meant that the WDSL ordered a blanket closure of all schoolboy/girls games last weekend.

Though we didn’t experience the winds that other parts of the country suffered we did however have our ‘fair sup’ of rain.

Hopefully the weather doesn’t deteriate further in the coming week and we can get the teams back in action.

The development squad did go ahead indoors.

There will be no DS this coming weekend as it is a long weekend and the Community Centre is booked up with the hosting of the National Feis competitions on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The following are the fixtures for the weekending Sat.28th/ Sun.29th Oct. 2017:

Under-8s: No fixture; Under-9s: No fixture; Under-10s away to St Patricks, ko Sunday to be confirmed.

Under-11s: Under-11 Academy Blitz in East Glendalough school at 1.30pm on Sunday.

Under-12s away to Greystones C, ko to be confirmed - (WDSL Under-12/13 Challenge Cup).

Under-14s: Fixture to be confirmed.

(Fixtures and KO times are subject to change).

Our first Last Man Standing competition gets under way this coming weekend (October 28-30). The cost is €10 per player and the prize pot will be 50 per cent of all monies that are taken in.

All selections for Week 1 need to be with the secretary at 087 6987653 or hughienolan@gmail. com on or before 9pm on Thursday, October 26.

If you require further details on the competition please contact the secretary.

Please support as all money raised goes towards the youth of the area.

The WDSL in conjunction with all the clubs in the league are running a fundraiser, ‘The Kube’, on Saturday, November 18, in the Parkview Hotel in Newtown.

It is hoped every club will enter at least one participant to take on ‘The Kube’.

The entry fee is €300 per participant, which each club must pay themselves or can get sponsored.

Sponsored cards are available at present through any committee member.

As yet the club haven’t decided who will take on ‘The Kube’ on behalf of the club but we have a couple of interested parties.

Anything over €300 raised on the sponsor cards goes to the club and our participant/s stands to win up to €1,500 for the club depending on how she or he does.

We had intended to have one player but we can officially announce that two coaches from the club, Stephen Nolan and John Dunleavy, will be representing the club on the night (no pressure lads).

The lads have been very active in collecting sponsorship in the past month so please support the lads as they raise some much-needed funds for the club.

We have two players from the club celebrating a birthday in the coming week and they are Jake O’Brien-Fitzsimons from the Development Squad and Darren Fisher from the Under-10s.

Happy birthday, lads, from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C.

For further information on all matters Newtown Juniors F.C. please contact the secretary at 087 6987653 or by email to hughienolan@gmail.com and you can also follow the club on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
